Whoa, you've got to send them $50 and wait until Jan 2015 to see if they'll have enough orders to make them? No thanks. How many of us will still have our cars by then LOL.

DSOmegaX 12-30-2012 09:16 PM

They're released as soon as they have 7500 orders. The 2015 date is just a deadline to achieve that number. Considering the car culture in CA and the number of restored/classic vehicles that those owners would LOVE to get their hands on a vintage plate, it shouldn't take long to fulfill the required number.

Hmm...a blue plate for my ultramarine...hmm. They're going to gouge us anyways, mind us well make it like I got something out of it.

Wife wants a black one for her '09 Mini. Would look nice on her dark grey with black trim Cooper.

I need one for my 66 beetle ;)

The form did not say if custom plate number is included in the $50? A personalized white plate cost already $49...

DSOmegaX 12-30-2012 10:10 PM

$50 for either sequential OR customized. So yeah might as well customize it.

86BRZ 12-30-2012 10:17 PM

Good deal! $1 for custom personalized!

Thanks for this post. I'm in.

Wait, so can you do this for any car, not just old ones?

calis5nest 12-30-2012 11:53 PM

Good find thanks for the post

I think the $50 is just to reserve an application for the vintage plate. They will probably charge you additional annual cost once they accept your application for a customized plate. I do see that if they get the appropriate number of apps before 2015 they will start production, but even then it says it will take 9-12 months for the plate to arrive. Definitely a cool thing for the vintage/collectors' cars, but to me a clean white standard CA plate looks just fine for a modern car.
A black or blue plate would be pretty cool if the lettering were in white or black, but the yellow lettering kills it for me.

Anyways at least the discussion got me thinking about a personalized plate, so I went ahead and ordered a white one.

i'd love a black one but the wait is super long. ill prob still preorder one but i hate that it's going to take forever to arrive.

Hmm so it's 7500 per plate (for release). I wish there was a site where we could see how close each plate was to being released.
