Why do people know nothing about the BRZ?

Ive noticed that people outside of this forum have no idea what this car is. I caught a guy taking pictures of my car at the mall, and he asked me if the car was the sti version with 300hp and awd. I tried to correct him but he then insisted that there was a Japanese version (GT86) that must have been the one with 300hp... Ive been stopped, flagged down and questioned over and over again by people wanting to know basic questions about this car and it just seems like no one knows anything about it. There was a guy and his wife today who were driving a new Mecedes CLS550 i think, tell me how nice my BRZ was and asked the usual questions, HP, cost, ect. hes probably gonna go buy one now. Does Subaru even advertise this car in america? ive seen frs ads but never a BRZ ad. I feel like subaru should be paying me for all of the PR ive done on their behalf.

It's just like how I know nothing about Mercedes CLS550.
Until I saw it in your post, I did not know that there is a Mercedes model called CLS550.
I did not know it starts at $72,905.
I did not know it has 4.7L V8 Twin-turbo engine, which generates 402 hp @ 5000 rpm.
I did not know it has 7-speed automatic.
I did not know both of the front seats are 14-way power adjustable.
I did not know it has 14 Harman Kardon speakers with 610 watt stereo.
I did not know it has 18 x 9.5 in wheels with 285/35/18 tires.

Just like how I didn't know about all these about CLS550, many others wouldn't know about BRZ.

One of the teenage in my neighborhood stopped by while i was washing my brz, and started asking the same questions. He was telling me how badass it looked, then asked me if it came with a V8 -____________________- A lot of people know nothing about these cars, but im okay with educating them.

mact 12-28-2012 08:57 PM

^ This chassis would be so awesome with a small V8.

Chen 12-28-2012 09:38 PM

Just admire it that people are Interested in the twins.

Anorax 12-28-2012 09:56 PM

I've gotten dumbfounded looks when I tell them my Subaru is not AWD.

LeeMaster 12-28-2012 10:14 PM

I put ferrari badge on mine and got pulled over by a cop saying that its showing the car as a subaru. So I had to educate him and was seriously gonna get my car towed if I didnt have a phone to show him pictures of the actual badges. Haha... fml

Most people I have talked to now understand that the Scion and Toyota versions are out but when i tell them its a Subaru, they stare at me like Paris Hilton trying to reduce fractions.

alan.chalkley 12-29-2012 12:02 AM

My friend who is a subaru nut , said that subaru only make 4wds and this car called brz is not a subaru. LOL.

mashal 12-29-2012 12:06 AM

Most people that know anything about these cars are enthusiasts or people that bought them coz they saw the commercial and are now on the forums, atleast they are learning. And like someone said above , no one is a walking encyclopedia of cars (besides the top gear team), most people don't know what size their engine is .

Met a dude pumping gas in his brz , I was driving my civic (it's winter) went up to him to ask him some questions and I acted like I didn't know shit, lets just say he doesn't even know what "brz" stands for .. Now that's sad .

Walla Walla 12-29-2012 12:22 AM

the funniest thing is when you need to argue with someone that you are sure that your car is not awd... and they still insist....

That's when you invite them for a ride-along on a rainy day.

chulooz 12-29-2012 12:28 AM

Its a brand new 2013 model, what did you honestly expect? This niche car will sell itself within the proper circles. Have you picked up an auto magazine? You cant miss the twins there.

Coheed 12-29-2012 12:48 AM

It's worse when everyone insists the twins are a Toyota, rebadged as a subaru.

Noone even knows that Suby builds quite a few Camrys out there!

SIA may build Camry's but it's still a 100% Toyota product (parts, assembly process, even the majority of the workers that were TMMK trained when SIA began Camry production). Really nobody SHOULD know that some Camry's are built at a Subaru plant (not BY Subaru).

jkonquer 12-29-2012 01:01 AM

I have not seen a si gle brz commercial on the tv, seen couple of frs. Its almost subaru doesnt want this car to sell. Maybe they will take it off the market and have some awd car.

DSOmegaX 12-29-2012 01:11 AM

Because Subaru doesn't need to market the car to sell it. They let the car speak for itself. The demand is still higher than the supply, so they're not hurting in any way.

Personally, I prefer it this way. It means people who know about the car, appreciate it, and are in the market for one, are the people who actually buy it. I've met people who have FRS who actually don't really care about the car. They just happened to see it when looking at a tC and thought it looked cooler.

It is still a Suby facility. Pumping out Camrys... right? Even if it is Toyota employees building it. So Toyota is just using their equipment. Just an interesting tid bit to know I guess.

Sort of. All of their equipment was provided by Toyota as well (for the Camry line). It is a cool facility (I've been there many times). Definitely the most "Toyota" manufacturer, that isn't a full Toyota plant (aside from the old NUMMI plant in Cali, that was building the Matrix and Vibe).

fatoni 12-29-2012 01:52 AM

why does every thread turn into this ridiculous "who built the ft86?" nonsense or bickering about which company is superior?

ziggz501 12-29-2012 05:00 AM

Any car enthusiast will know what a brz is. The general public doesn't fall under the category of "car enthusiast". That's why the camry is one of the best selling cars out there. No enthusiast would ever think about driving a camry (unless you have a family). People in general just want some sort of magical four-wheeled device that takes them from point A to point B without much thought involved and yet comfortable/luxurious at the same time.
I'll also bet you that most people that drive Mercedes, BMW, Audi (any brand with their low end model starting at 30k) haven't the slightest clue about why their car cost more than a honda civic other than the fact it has leather interior or gimmick crap like wipers for their headlights... hell, most ppl refer to the Audi R8 as "the iron man car".

ShoNUFF 12-29-2012 09:06 AM

Do you guys think the twins will sell as well or better then the 350z

Considering it's a bit cheaper... 350Z started as ~$28K originally I think?

I believe a similar group of people would cross shop this car.

Hoping nobody buys it.. I like being the only one around!

Turbowned 12-29-2012 04:08 PM

7,000,000,000 people on Earth, 6,000 BRZ's. Do the math. Until Lindsay Lohan wraps one around a tree, it will continue to be relatively obscure, despite it's rave reviews in every magazine/news publication.

Unfortunately, the brz/frs will never outsell the Z. The reason being, the Z is the best selling sports car in history. Its not that its a better car, its just got 40 years of development/evolution behind it. Not to mention, Subaru/Toyota really underestimated the popularity of these cars, so they are underproduced atm.

350z=/=all of the z cars ever. i dont think it will sell as well as the 350z simply because of the state the global economy was in then compared to now.

I saw one the other day. It wasn't just for the BRZ, but they sure did show a lot of it. Granted they mentioned to "Come pick up an AWD Subaru" right when the BRZ was pictured.

I'm not sure about that. A lot of people are getting the BRZ/FR-S due to the fact that they can get a commuter that is fun and still gets over 30mpg. I'm one of them. ^_^ It sucked when the M3 had to go, but I was happy when I was still able to pick up a fun car.

86BRZ 12-29-2012 05:46 PM

I like it this way, limited production and few people know about. Think about if this is well known like a Honda Accord...I probably buy something else.

Truf. One of the reasons I bought the BRZ was because of its limited availability. I've always wanted a car that was "rare", but they are usually out of my price range.

even if you believe there are going to be well over 150k people looking to do that, there are still many more popular options that are more consumer friendly. we obviously won know until its said and done but in its peak, the 350z was selling over 30k a year and i just dont see this car (or any sports car) doing that in this economy.

Cameronghanson 12-29-2012 07:22 PM

im perfectly fine with people knowing nothing about this car

glorydays 12-29-2012 08:08 PM

Yea I suppose it is pretty cool having such a rare car. I didn't realize that it would get nearly the amount of attention that it does. Hopefully the resale value is high in six years.

Same here. The more people don't know, the better. As soon as a random person ever refers to my car as one of the "twins", it's time to sell (just kidding, but I really don't want these cars lost in the masses).

Khazzy 12-29-2012 08:19 PM

Just wait for the new Fast and the Furious, then we will see how popular the car becomes.

Right now it is popular in the correct market, the enthusiast.

Joe99 12-29-2012 08:19 PM

There's a blue Brz in a Brooklyn dealer. Been sitting there for two months. I test drove it before thanksgiving. Who wants it??

always be relatively obscure because it's slotted at a very limited market.
