Hello 818, bye BRZ? Kit car content.

Ok, a kit car might not be for everyone... and this is topless.

Factory Five 818.

1,800lb, mid-engine, 265hp ej20, under ~$15k.

Got3n 12-28-2012 11:52 AM

oh wow....it looks nice.

ShoNUFF 12-28-2012 11:53 AM

wow.

cobrabyte 12-28-2012 11:54 AM

I've been watching the development of this kit car and, to be honest, it's one of the big reasons I held onto my 2002 WRX after I picked up the BRZ.

I'm torn between road and track versions but I do believe I'm IN on getting one of these. :)

OrbitalEllipses 12-28-2012 12:03 PM

Still think the front fascia is HIDEOUS. Great concept, but a swing and a miss on the looks.

M-17 12-28-2012 04:13 PM

Interested for sure, even if the front looks just ehh... its not a deal breaker.

Lonewolf 12-28-2012 04:47 PM

Is it road legal? :bellyroll:

Yeah, it reminds me of a Lotus 211. Not the best looking car but handles like a dream. I'm in it for the handling.

If you didn't want the boxer, can you throw an F20c, K20, or similar inline in there without much work?

It's purpose built for the EJ series of motors with hard points for the engine mounts. You could probably fab something up (read: MUCH work), but why start from this platform if you want to do that?

Hell, a plain old EJ251 or 253 would be fun, let alone a 255 or 257 turbo engine.

Are there other options under 10K?

Jedi1 12-28-2012 06:44 PM

I've been following this for a long time. SOLD!!!!!

Jon H 12-29-2012 02:44 PM

Want! Big time.

Thanks for sharing.

JDMenrique 12-29-2012 02:47 PM

the concept is great, the kit is ugly.

bestwheelbase 12-29-2012 03:35 PM

Front end styling still looks awkward to me, but you can't argue with the fun-per-dollar value in what they've built. I hope you guys will post journals of the build. Looks like a blast!

Mathewgzlz 12-29-2012 03:36 PM

The power to weight ratio is ridiculous tht thing must be fast as hell

Supermassive 12-29-2012 03:52 PM

Do Want! Perfect track car, cheap, easy to source parts, and looks like it will handle like a dream...might have to see about getting one this year!

Supermassive 12-29-2012 06:57 PM

So I obviously don't know jack shit about the EJ20...so maybe if someone can help me out here, does the EJ25 use the same motor mounts as the EJ20? I only ask because the Factory 5 site says the car can use 02-07 Iprezza or WRX as donor cars but theres so many damn engine variations available it's kinda confusing.

OrbitalEllipses 12-29-2012 07:28 PM

Yes. Same mounts on all EJ series engines. One of these with a JDM 207 (pref V7) would be stupid. My problem with the title is that you're comparing a kit car to a fully furnished car. If you're shopping for toys I guess the comparison is valid.

Supermassive 12-29-2012 09:16 PM

Yeah this is totally a toy, but man it just makes me excited because I really want to build a car up like this...the price is what makes this so exciting. Of course there would be a ton of extra little things that will cost more then just the kit and donor car like sandblasting/acid dipping parts from the donor car for paint/powdercoat/anodizing prep. Now I'm torn between the track kit or the road kit...I'm assuming they are completely the same except for the roll bar...gonna have to have a chat with F5 and see whats up!

It has the 'kit car content' disclaimer for people with problems. For those who have a daily this provides an enticing alternative. With a JDM alternative motor would be even more of a hoot to drive.

n2oinferno 12-30-2012 12:18 AM

I've been following this for a long time. It'd be a great toy without sinking 30k and up like you do with their other cars. There were so many good community designs too. I can't really figure out why they thought this looked the best. Still really want a GTM, but would settle for this. :)

dori. 12-30-2012 02:23 AM

looks like a Viper and S2000 had a baby and the was consequently hit with a hammer

prolly a beast to drive tho

Supermassive 12-30-2012 02:41 AM

Only $99 for a spot on the list...should I do it? Sigh cars are my kryptonite.

bakerr6 12-30-2012 10:47 AM

I'll pass just based on the looks. They have so many other kits that look so much better, I just do not understand...

I wouldn't mind ahving any of their other kit cars though haha

finch1750 12-30-2012 01:35 PM

Thank you for showing me my next car. Holy crap... :burnrubber:

SUB-FT86 12-31-2012 07:51 PM

So what does the 10k get you? I'm guessing it's not the whole car with engine/tranny right?

Supermassive 12-31-2012 08:26 PM

There's a list of everything you get for the $10k kit here:

https://www.factoryfive.com/kits/pro.../what-you-get/

And here's what you need from the donor car:

I'm officially going to put a deposit on the 818R...my new years resolution was originally going to be save money, but screw that nonsense, my new resolution is to build this thing...starting the hunt for a cheap WRX...

Nice. I actually want a mix of the two cars :)

Just wait around for a salvage/wreck car or buy one from an auto insurance auction.

Dave-ROR 01-11-2013 08:18 PM

Checking copart there's a bunch of very useful wrecked WRXes out there to use!

Yeah I've been looking at copart, waiting to see how much I get from returns before i commit to any of them though.

rice_classic 01-12-2013 03:29 AM

This might be a good race car to transition into. I bet I can fit a supercharger on it. :)

Yup I'm sure you could...but why? Just buy a WRX motor or hell an STi motor and you get turbo's stock. This car will be a hoot with the stock 265HP 2.5L STI motor with mild mods to boost it to 300WHP, the car only weighs 1550lbs in the R model, and 1800 for the S model.

Oh don't you dare bring logic into this!

Well in that case...

For a toy car that thing looks perfect! I will however stick with FI on my FR-S to get my fix.
