Anyone notice vibration from headliner?

Small issue but wonder it it's just me.

Anyone noticed right above your head a vibration/buzzing coming from the headliner when on the highway going over 55 MPH, especially on concrete roads???

whataboutbob 12-28-2012 01:51 AM

Yes. Just started over the last few weeks. I've fidgeted with the window and seal on the driver's door a bit and it seems to be related. Haven't put much effort into trying to eliminate it, yet.

BRZnut 12-29-2012 01:08 AM

I noticed that the headliner is not flush with the roof...there is some movement when you push on it. Need to figure a way to dampen the vibration.

YES!! I have had my BRZ since Aug and no issue, until now....I think it has something to do with the cold weather(Canada). It gets really annoying I started pressing on the headliner to see if something was loose. For some reason it disappeared. I will check tomorrow.

Could be your rear-view mirror against the windshield... That or it could also be the wire harness that is up in the headliner for your (optional) auto-dimming mirrors.

Yeah, I had this problem with mine when I first got it, about a week later (It's about 3 weeks old, has 1300 miles on the clock) the drivers side weather liner came completely off, something to do with cold weather, dealer thinks. It's going in next week to be fixed and I expect the issue to go away.

Mine is right over my head..if I push up on the headliner above my head it stops.

Rattles right behind my drivers seat.

sieeegel 01-06-2013 10:29 PM

mine rattles at random times on the back rear of my headliner. Near one of the attachment screws to the roof.

This seems possible, as I'd hit a pothole that jarred the auto-dim mirror loose. After getting it fixed at the dealership, the noise started happening within a week.

However, the timing of this noise also coincided with the first time the weather was under 60F outside on my drive home from work. If I ever get around to installing my sound deadener collecting dust in the garage, I'll definitely take a look.

As everyone else says, my noise stops when applying minimal upward pressure with a finger (though the constant buzz around 1900rpm tempts me to use far greater fist pressure..):mad0259:

mined started doing this as well. has anybody found an easy fix? i know the roof liner is removable, but i'm not sure how to get in the front by the visors.

infinite012 06-08-2013 03:55 PM

I don't have any rattles from the headliner. I have pulled the headliner off and laid RAAMmat all over the place.

just looked into it. seems fairly easy to do.

infinite012 06-08-2013 04:02 PM

Yes. 2 screws on each visor mount, pull down. Then you push a flat head into the front and rear of the clip that holds the visor towards the center of the car and pull that out. There is a single push clip that should be at centerline of the headliner. I think there's also a clip/poppit somewhere up front that clips the headliner into the roof/window frame.

The C pillars yank out easily enough, and there are 3 push clips that line the rear of the headliner. From here, it's fairly straight forward.

Mind the wires and connectors that are near the front for the map light and bluetooth mic (if you have it) and the radio wire that is taped to the headliner.

I noticed a rattle that was right behind the drivers head. It also occurs on the passenger side as well. with some pressure on the headliner then noise would go away.

I would notice the rattle when the temps were around 90F outside and the car had sat in the sun for a awhile. The passenger side starts at a higher temp, around 100F.

The driver side has been solved by the dealer. They found some spot(pinch) welds that were causing the problem. What ever they did, the noise is gone.

But, there was a downside. I have a few marks on the roof of the car from were they manipulated the metal. I have attempted to take pictures...but you cant see it. They are going to address this when I have it in to fix the passenger side.

I am fairly certain this was a similar noise that people were experiencing on the rear deck, just a different location.

Subie 06-08-2013 04:04 PM

I have had this issue since new. Subaru doesn't care to fix it.

BRZnut 06-08-2013 04:27 PM

I am the OP and still have it, but only on rough cement roads at highway speeds. Goes away if I push on the liner just above my head. Would love to get behind the liner and caulk the hell out of it so that it is attached to the roof. Maybe that would stop the vibration.

mezdup 06-08-2013 04:43 PM

@GotM @Subie @BRZnutso my issue arose when i was testing out a new sub. i put it up too high and it set something loose and started the rattle.

just found a nice DIY to remove the front side of the headliner (basically depicts what @infinite012 described above): http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?p=272101. followed it and shoved some weather stripping in there and it definitely helped. there was a raised portion that touches the roof of the car so i shoved it between that and the roof of the car. if i put it real loud i can still hear a little rattle but at regular listening levels the rattling has seemed to subsided.

the rear can be removed by popping out the plastic plug things at the rear of the car if you wanna take the whole thing off and dynamat it or something

l0aded 06-11-2013 05:09 AM

I think I have this problem. I think I know how to fix it too. 3M Thinsulate Acoustic taped above the headliner; should dampen any vibrations, insulate heat and reduce low frequency noises. I'll report back when I decide to put it in (already bought).

Yes, I'm not sure what is loose, but it sounds like it's right overhead!

BRZnut 04-14-2014 10:46 PM

As the car is aging (now have 10K miles) the vibration/sound from the headliner seems to have gone. At least for now!

Olim 01-16-2018 06:01 AM

Relatable to this post!

I've got a similar or same headliner noise on my 2017 86.. more interior rattles for my "new" car (Still have the rear deck popping sound from another post http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showt...ht=wheel+noise).

My noise is also located right above the driver's head toward the back and goes away when I apply some upward pressure onto the headliner. The noise sounds almost like a loose screw on a hard surface, and only shows up when my car is on bumpier roads/highways where I'm going 70+mph probably due to some vibration. Didn't even know I had the new noise until the day I turned my music off.

Going to check out a Toyota dealer first and see if I can get a diagnosis cause this should fall under my warranty. If they can't solve it, I'm taking out my tools and following some guides!

BRZnut 01-16-2018 10:11 PM

Don't worry, mine went away at 10K miles on its own and never returned! (now 4 years later).
