GTX 2863R
I've been looking at some turbo maps and wanted to get some forum feedback.
What do you guys think of the GTX 2863R? http://www.atpturbo.com/root/release...365-1_comp.jpg I've been looking at its maps and it seems very well suited for the low boost many of us are planning to run on pump gas. Also this turbo looks to have a lot more potential than the disco potato for future upgrades if the user wants to get a little crazy. http://www.atpturbo.com/root/release...s-GT2860RS.jpg How come the GT2871R is getting more love? http://www.maptun.com/shopProduct.php?pid=2443 Doesn't seem near as well suited for those planning to stay on stock internals & pump. GT2871R gets more love due to the fact that turbo has been around for awhile. The GTX series is awesome though! GTX2863R Is a nice turbo IMHO.

We have tested the GTX2863r vs the GTX2867r and GT2871r. Spool wise there isn't enough gain from the GTX2863 vs the GTX2867 to make it worth going with the smaller compressor wheel. All three turbo's run the same turbine wheel and that is going to dictate most of your spool characteristics on a small turbo like this.

300rpm spool increase from the 2867 to the 2863 is quite substantial. Even though the 67 will make more power on less boost, depending on setup. If you are wanting max power potential from the 2867r, you might as well step up to the 3071r. |
Would the spool difference between the 2860rs and the 2867r be even greater than 300RPM?

I haven't played with any GTX's yet but I run a FP HTA wheel in my GT28's (they call it a 2868) it is a billet compressor wheel, and probably a good part of the reason Garrett started making the GTX line up, the turbine and CHA are pure Garrett GT28
I absolutely LOVE the spool of the 2868 and the flow is better than the GT2871 it replaced, I would tend to believe that with the TiAl V-Band Housing and billet compressor wheel that this combo out spools a 2860rs ALL DAY LONG, My 2.0l SR20VET puts 450 to the wheels (not hubs) on a big Dynojet known for breaking hearts, (god knows it has broken mine time and again) I wouldn't expect anything less from these new Factory wheels in the GTX lineup, According to my sources at Garrett the 63mm wheel still flows almost the same as an old 71... |

Great little turbo, and goes like crazy. Its like a lightswitch. Cruising around is economical, but sweeping past 3500rpm results in V8 power output instantaneously. I'm hoping the 63r will have a little more oomph up top. And it seems to match the turbine a little better. Perhaps the 67r is the one to go with, but realistically it is much easier on the engine to make 67r-power-levels with the T30 turbine. But the spool difference between the two is really close! I would expect the smaller compressors to offer better transient response though. The GTx2860r looks like a disco on steroids! Of course, I like the turbos capable of higher pressure ratios, not because I plan on pushing a ton of boost... but rather, I live at high elevation as well. And it is important to maintain high compressor efficiency in those higher PR regions where I'm at. Otherwise, the turbo cooks the air instead of moving it. |
