top off oil?
with my first oil change being scheduled for like 7k miles and this being a new engine, i'm sure it will need to have the oil topped off before going in for a change.
what do you recomend i pick up for topping it off? what is in there from the factory? does it have to be the same oil? |
Why would you top it off before it gets changed? It'll get flushed away with the rest of the old oil.
If you're asking if you should check your oil level once a month or every couple thousand miles like most people should be doing, then yes check it. You may be able to get OEM oil through your dealer. I haven't heard anyone mention burning oil but then again that is a quirk of boxers so that may be the case down the road. I wouldn't worry about it other than paying attention to your car, after the first oil change you should know what's in there just in case. |

so does anyone know what is in there from the factory and what would be a good choice to keep on hand for top offs? |

The oil from the factory is an Idemitsu oil blended for Subaru. You can get a similar oil from a Subaru dealer, but you can top it off with any API SN/ILSAC GF5 0W-20 synthetic oil.

Our suggestion would be to drive about 1500 miles and then have the oil changed at an independent shop with some quality Synthetic 0w20 oil such as Amsoil or Motul. As for topping off, if you are putting in a 1/4 of a quart 0w20 Synthetic can be used to top it off.
I would check it every 1K miles as the boxers have a tendency to consume some oil in our experience. -Mike Paisan http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/91072632.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/14...8/original.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/133406601.jpg http://www.whiteline.com.au/images/logos/perf1.jpg 11+ Years Maintaining, Modifying and Educating TriState Subaru Enthusiasts. Is the engine oil in the FR-S synthetic? I've read the manual on page 344 and nowhere does it indicate synthetic... it only says use "toyota genuine motor oil" Toyota definitely makes non synthetic 0W20 cuz that's what is used in the corolla. 0W20 non-synthetic.

Well. if its not synthetic a top off using synthetic would cause more harm than anything. One should not mix synthetic / non-synthetic oil. And then the other question is the dealers if the car is synthetic and the dealers replace the oil with non-synthetic thats a big no no too... Im going to search around and see if this topic has come up before... cuz this will concern me during the next oil change at the dealer... most Toyota's are not synthetic and if the techs put in regular oil mixed with synthetic... wow... |
