The need of a oil catch tank...
hey guys, so I've seen quite a few 86s/BRZs and other Jap imports have oil catch tanks fitted to their car. I've done a bit of research and noticed that they keep your engine side of things neat and tidy. My question is... would you guys recommend an oil catchment tank?
Also, not sure if I'll catch anything if i do commit to installing one, the article says... "the most common reason catch cans don't catch anything is that air flow through them is too smooth to cause the oil to condense while it passes through the can. Some sort of filtering media is often needed to help sort this out." Filtering Media - People have used a lot of different things as filtering media. Foam lawnmower filters are a safe and popular choice. If you decide to use media that's made of metal (steel wool, chain, etc) and have a metal catch can, be sure that they're made of the same stuff. They'll corrode if they're not, and you don't want the resulting debris being fed into your motor. so yeah, would you guys recommend an oil catchment tank? not sure if i need one... :iono: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/attac...1&d=1342755460 |
You only need one if you go FI. It won't hurt to install one now but there won't really be much/any blow by until it's boosted. The cusco one is unbaffled and pretty crap. Crawford do a nice recirculating one or there are a lot of quality drainable ones just do a bit of research first.

Yes you're right, but I was talking need. Once you have positive pressure blow by increases dramatically and you must protect the intercooler from it. If the core gets fully choked up with oil it can become nearly useless.
Great link btw!! PS.. Anyone notice this meme of putting lego in the background of bokeh shots? lol .. see it from a lot of Texans. |
FYI they're illegal in NSW.
|
Seriously? That strikes me as a pretty silly law. Any idea what the reasoning is?
|
I know vented systems are illegal in most of AU pretty surprised if a closed / recirc one is tho?

The catch can on my forester was legal and engineered in NSW, it wasn't vented to atmosphere though.
I'm making my own with internal baffle system to fit in the gap between the battery and strut bar. ~3.2L volume with black pushlock AN fittings & hose. Only going with a single setup at the moment plumbed into the PCV line that runs to the back of the intake manifold. I'll be leaving the inlet breather alone for the moment. The PCV line is where most of the oil vapour gets introduced to the intake manifold. |

well i guess i won't be fitting one due to defect. don't want to run into any trouble with the cops. |

exactly. I'd rather run a closed-system catch can and run the gauntlet of an encounter with an uninformed cop than have that crap contaminate my combustion chamber and coke up the pistons/valves.
If a cop did sticker you for a closed-system catch can, it's really easy to clear. |

Bracket will be done tomorrow ;)
I've got my catch can tacked up now and the port locations figured out, just finishing the design for the baffles |
