Radio Upgrade

Hi,
Anyone planning on replacing the radio in their 86? I am considering installing one of these "Chinese" DVD units. Have one in my Prado for a few years now and still works great. I vowed never to import directly again due to difficulty in communicating with China. (reinforced by a current work experience as well). Got a quote from Electromannsa for R5499 including maps. I also see a place in Edenvale that installs them for R4999.(see back of car magazine). Anyone dealt with these guys?

The only reason that I am going to replace is because the current radio does nt do RDS. 5 grand fitted sounds cheap

The OEM radio is beyond horrible.

Bought a 10 inch low profile sub and a set of midrange speakers today. Hope to have it fitted by the weekend.

Hey guys, if any of you have upgraded yr sound systems yet would appreciate some pics to see how they fit and the makes. Trying to get a plug and play system with a good fit. A lot of options out there but they never show any pics of it installed. So annoyed that the OEM radio is green background.........TSA thought out so many apsects except the radio!

There are 3 popular units that fit in the FRS/BRZ/86, which you can find in the audio section of the forum as well as the units SAV has indicated on the Africa forum.
As far as installations and equipment go, there are many types of installs, based on what you want to spend.
Keep weight and power draw in mind as this car needs to be as light and have little power draw from the battery.

That Kenwood is pretty much the same as mine, except it fits perfectly. Good radio if you want the "OEM" look, it doesn't have a lot of features though but it's got what you need and it's easy to use.

Any one know what the quality is like on the Toyota replacement jobbie? Sav, what did your Kenwood set you back?

I think it was just under R7k inlcuding fitment and the optional iPhone video cable(which I rarely use).
I was also looking at the JVC and Sony units which are probably nicer but I specifically wanted something with a volume knob since our cars don't have steering controls.

I must say though, it sounds a LOT better than the OEM unit.

EDIT:
I see the Kenwood Toyota unit doesn't have a knob. Pity.

This is the one I have:

The illumination is customizable to match the car so I'm assuming the one you've posted would be the same.

So by changing just the radio the speakers sound better? Can play a bit louder without distorting?

Absolutely.

If you've heard distortion with the OEM radio then it was probably the radio clipping and not the speakers distorting.
