From Popular Mechanics

Subaru BRZ / Scion FR-S

The most hyped twins today are the new sport coupes built through the collaboration of Subaru and Toyota. You have to study these cars closely to find anything but a name badge to tell them apart: Their front bumper covers are slightly different, and the Scion's got a little badge that says "86" on the front fenders (a nod to the AE86 rear-drive, ultrafun Toyota Corolla coupe of 1983 to 1987). Inside, the auxiliary gauges are slightly different sizes, but the cars share a unique flatter version of Subaru's 2.0-liter flat-four engine that makes 200 hp with Toyota's fuel-injection system.

Actually, this one is a three-part rebadging job. Overseas, the Scion is called the Toyota GT-86, or just Toyota 86.

What other cars have a calabo like this? I know the dodge stealth and the 3000gt was one. Another was the eclipse and the talon. Any thing else?

Also posted here some time back, but not a lot of comments...

The entire GM Geo brand...

There are lots of others with cobranding.

Don't a lot of the luxury brands still do this?

The big Infinity SUV is the same as the Nissan Armada, isn't it?

Suzuki Sidekick and Geo Tracker (?)

Yeah, but they're both part of the same company, so those are a little more obvious, like Ford/Lincoln, Chevy/GMC/Cadillac, Toyota/Lexus, etc.

Gm is the worst offender for this. Back in the early/mid '80s, they had 5 vehicles that were essentially the same car...

Chevrolet Cavalier/Pontiac Sunbird/Oldsmobile Firenza/Buick Skyhawk and the (LOL) Cadillac Cimarron. All the same car, and all junk.

Plymouth Laser?
Plymouth Turbo?
Dodge Challenger 2nd Gen?

Anyone else find VW and Audi starting to become really similar? I know they are owned by the same group but i thought they promote competition...

But I don't think that the VW product really undercuts the Audi product too badly. My girlfriend and I were looking at both a Golf/GTI and an A3 for kicks, but we're leaning more toward the A3 for the following reasons:
  • AWD is available on the A3. (Yes, you can get it on the Golf R, but that's a very different car and not quite what we'd consider.)
  • A3 is pretty well-optioned, even in stock form, plus there aren't too many trim levels, options or packages, unlike BMW.
  • The Golf/GTI is definitely more affordable, but that's for the base model. The one that I'd prefer (excluding the Golf R) essentially makes it nearly as expensive as the A3.
Yes, it creates a little bit of cross-shopping, but I don't think that it hurts them. They're still getting the sale, as opposed to them losing out to another company.
