DIY - Free Intake Sound changer mod

I saw some threads about the TRD sound changer and thought, wow that is a waste of money! I bet it's really easy to modify the stock piece to do the same thing.

Here's the various TRD sound changers that attach to the intake sound tube (replacing the stock grey piece)

Anyway, if you need help located/removing/installing this piece, use this guy's guide: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23864

Once you have the stock piece out, you will see it has foam and some baffling inside:

I took out my power drill and removed all the foam and baffling. I'm sure you could use other things, but it worked fine. I cleaned it up at the end with a screwdriver and blew out the shavings.

Here's what it looked like (essentially, I gutted it):

Re-install and enjoy the FREE sound-changer mod. In my opinion, it makes a difference. Total time from start to finish, 15 minutes.

I can't say I've ever heard such a noise. This mod makes the sound tube from the intake louder. Just like the TRD part does. But this one is free.

Good to know, i will probably doing this and for Free! :).

Can you tell if this is to loud or you can supporting this during a high way run?

That's pretty cool, would probably try this out since I have some free time :w00t:

I don't think I've ever heard this sound whenever I shift

In my opinion it's not too loud. It sounds a bit more like the car has an aftermarket intake. If anyone finds it to be too loud, they could throw a cotton ball in there ;)

Haha good :P i will put this on my to do list.

Ill probably do this, but yeah my car when shifting at about 7k makes this subtle noise like a duck call, no lie, i think its the diaphram in the sound tube or something lol, its actually pretty funny....

Would you compare the new sound to the blue, green, or red one? (Sound clips of each are on the link you posted)

honestly, it's so hard to gauge from clips like that. The camera used, the distance from the tube, etc. If I had to guess, I'd say it would sound like the red one the most.

This is a very unscientific modification. I will say that it didn't introduce any weird or annoying sounds to the cabin. It just sounds like the intake got louder. Generally, I like intake growly sounds. If you hate those sounds, don't bother.

Does this increase road noise when cruising (highway speeds)? Or do you really only hear the change when pushing it a little bit?

no extra road noise was distinguishable. I can only hear the difference when putting load on the motor and revving past 3500.

Could someone do this and get one of the decibel meter apps for their phone and measure before and after?
