Fuel Gauge is Inaccurate
 

I arrived at the gas station to top off my fuel and noticed that after doing so... the fuel gauge did not move at all. The only way I have found to fix this is if I remove the battery for 12 seconds...

I started experimenting with this. What causes it, and how to remedy the situation...

Apparently this only happens (at least for me) when you have filled up, then traveled a little ways (let's say 50 miles) and then just topped off the gas at your ending destination. (I do this when I come home from visiting family so I have enough gas for the week). So I guess the trick is... Use at least 1/4 of the tank before filling up again... Otherwise, the fuel gauge is thrown off...

If for some reason it still happens to you... I know I hate having to reset all my radio stations and stereo configurations... you can just pull the battery for about 5 seconds... If done right. Only the dashboard is reset and your radio settings are maintained. :)

Don't top your tank, there's a warning against doing so. I found this out the hard way with a CEL when on a trip with my WRX.

I'd bring that to the dealer! I never had problem with it!

Does that mean continuing to fill up your tank even after the pump auto stops you? If so, then yeah, it's a really bad idea to do that since there's a warning right on the fuel door.

If the pump stops, then you stop.

Lol some people these days .. Please explain me to me how this is a car issue ???
The needle in most cars now don't move for the first 50-80 miles anyways .. And you got alot of time if your topping up a gallon of gas

First off, no i'm not topping it off in a sense that I'm going past the fill line when the gas pump stops... But yes it does start dropping for me around 50miles traveled and I travel a little bit more than that from my parents place... but once it starts dropping and I arrive at my house, I will top it off just so I have that full tank of gas for the week. (used to anyway haha). I don't do it anymore... So yes it is an issue if the fuel gauge drops and you fill up and it still doesn't move back to full. :P I'm not the first to experience this here, but I just wanted to post my experience and how I came up with a temporary fix if someone else does it that is least annoying. :)

I knew what you meant. I have had the same problem. Since I started refueling at 1/2 tank or less, the issue has not happened. I got in the habit of keeping the tank as full as possible a long time ago. Back in the day when carburetors and steel gas tanks were the norm. It's a hard habit to break.

I thought I'd read this issue occured... Just had it happen to me in the BRZ. I had only drove 50 miles and since I had to go by my regular fuel station I decided to go ahead and fill her back up since I was already there... I didn't "top off" the tank just as the original OP and the gauge never moved. Now that I've finally drove a little over 50 it has started moving again.

Anyway, just wanted to post that this has happened recently if anyone else searches the issue. I know I'm going to mention it to my dealer when I go in for service next; however, I can't say I've been too impressed with how they've handled other things so far... (I'll be switching where I get my car maintained if they fail to impress this next and possibly final time!)

ive filled my car up 70 times without an issue its full when the pump stops and it fills 10.5 gallons any time the light comes on when my fuel is low just like it is supposed to

my fuel gauge doesn't move till about 50-60 miles either, my last car i could go 120 miles before it came off full lol...

@carbonBLUE This isn't the initial "non-move" that you typically see with full tank. My gauge was reporting between the first 1/4th of a tank being used and not to the "pegged" full location... When it was then refueld it does not move from that location to the typical "full" location. Basically it shows that you're not full when you actually are...

It appears that the gauge has started reporting accurate after I have now used enough fuel to pass that gauge mark... It is a really odd bug!

Just picked up my new BRZ last night and the same thing happened to me. I did about 20 miles from when the dealer topped up. I decided to re-fill the tank to reset my MPG avg because of all the idling at the dealer during the intro.

Anyway, here are the facts:
-Topped up ~2gallons
-Needle was about 15/16th full.
-1 mile later the next day, needle is below 7/8th

This happened today on my 2017 Toyota 86. I am just gonna burn down to bout half a tank and fill again and see if it goes back right ? Anybody know of a real fix or solution. Not a big deal just more a quirk than a problem.

Most have worked themselves out. A couple of guys have had to have it fixed.
