My oil level was low!

Took my car to the dealer today to have some noises checked out. I have 4100 miles. They said the oil was low and lectured me about checking it frequently and having it changed every 3750 instead of 7500 miles. They asked if I drove it hard. I said I do drive spiritedly [my mpg is below 20] ;). They didn't at all scold me. In fact, they said "great! The car is meant to be driven and driven for fun! After-all, it is a toy [for big kids] But, I should keep an eye on my oil level."

Does this sound normal? I'm not an expert on this kind of thing; but, it seems like the engine is burning oil abnormally. I am a bit concerned; should I be?

Additional note: I had the cel issue (they only replaced the ecu) at 1900 miles. Nothing was mentioned about the oil then. I also recall checking my oil level early on (maybe around 1000 miles) and it was full. So, it didn't come with a low oil level.

What do you guys think?

I check my oil each fill up, I would recommend looking into an AOS?

Forgive my lack of knowledge, what's AOS?

Burning some oil on new motor is normal. Mine does it too.

Ok, I have no idea what that is. But, I will look into it and educate myself a little. Thanks for the tip. :)

Ok, cool, so it should stop burning oil as the engine gets broken in?

Maybe, maybe not. Just check it more frequently.

My BRZ uses no oil. Even the first 5000 miles passed by with zero oil use. My oil level was right at the full dot at purchase and 5000 miles later on factory fill it was right at the full dot.

Did a change at 5K and I'm now at 6600 miles. Still zero oil use...amazing!

I should mention that I did not follow the factory break in guide. I just drove the car a bit harder than I would typically. Took revs to 5,000 rpm several times each drive and did not hold at a constant rpm for long.

Now that I'm over 1,000 miles (way past) I generally have fun with the car. I'll pull at least 6,000+ rpm in third gear several times each drive.

Mine also did not use any oil for the first 3400 miles (parked now). Then again my fuel economy was 33mpg so I'm not exactly beating the heck out of the car.

Just how low was it? I would keep an eye on it but this sounds kind of like the dealership trying to blame you for something they should be finding the cause of, and fixing.

This is what I do have some concern about. The dealership has been VERY good so far. But, I will be keeping a close eye on this. Thx!

What break-in procedures did you follow? An AOS isn't really a fix, just how low was it?

ahausheer 12-13-2012 03:09 PM

It should not be low with your mileage. It was either low from the factory or low after the CEL issue was fixed or you have a real problem. Keep an eye on it.
