Event: The Ridge Racing School HPDE

A couple weeks ago, I decided for the sake of mental health to sneak in a track day at The Ridge before our dog's second knee surgery. Last time I drove out here was two years ago in a Chump car and I quickly learned just how much there is to forget. After the first couple sessions I started to remember the sight lines and landmarks I'd learned a few years ago with The Ridge Racing School and by the afternoon I was able add speed and started taking video. With a clear track, I was able to hit 2:17's and 2:18's fairly consistently and before I turned on the camera, Harry's said I managed a 2:16.90 that I'm a bit skeptical of.

The link at the top is the best lap I have video of, 2:17.40. Hopefully later this year I'll be able to head back out there and get an instructor to ride with me (paging @rice_classic) so I can start trimming the fat.

How'd you like the Ridge? Went there for the first time yesterday and it was tons of fun, the elevation changes are way steeper in person than it shows in photos/videos. I managed to squeeze in a 2:10 and was consistently between that and 2:12 with Nitto NT01, Carbotech XP10 front, Ferodo DS2500 rears and SPC camber bolts.

Can't wait to go there again this summer. I would definitely go there more if it was a lot closer to Vancouver :(

That is a helluva drive all the way from Vancouver (either BC or WA). Did you stay nearby?

I really like the Ridge - while, in my opinion, the layout isn't as nuanced and challenging as Pacific Raceways the smoother racing surface makes me much more comfortable pushing the car. Whereas at Pacific, I'm always on edge, anticipating bumps and crests, and leaving a bit more on the table, at The Ridge I'm much more comfortable getting closer to the limits.

Its a great track with a great community. Never had a bad time there. Fortunately, the drive from Seattle isn't terrible.

Did some driving in the fog/rain last weekend. Crazy how little grip is available in the wet & cold on Hankook RS3.

I love Michelin PSS in cold or wet on track. They are a lot of fun in cold/warm and dry also but heat up and wear out fast if driven hard.

Yeah I know some guys that ran MPSS locally and I'm very impressed with them. If I can afford a 2nd set of rims, I would definitely get MPSS and stickier rubber for track. For now, RS3 are pulling double duty :)

I went to Summit Point's Shenandoah Circuit. Here's an in-car video of a few laps. Not my quickest laps, but I had data or GoPro issues on the other videos... I also had a buddy along for a ride on this session so some extra weight :)

I made it out to Track Night in America at Carolina Motorsports Park last week. I have been to CMP before with LeMons but this was my first time out with the SCCA's Track Night. Finally got to put together my GoPro data with OBD2 via TrackAddict on my phone. Highly recommend the TrackNight program!

I thought I'd share this video with my fellow track addicts.
I'm from South Africa, and we don't have many racetracks available for track days, etc, but this track is one which we enjoy, and it's the closest for me (about 280kms/175miles) from my home :(

This was recorded in April at Scooby Fest where us half-Scoobies were very welcome, and the very hot Evo which you'll see in the video was welcome too.
It was a great Petrolheads day with 150+ stunning cars there.

The track (Red Star Raceway) is 4.2kms(2.6mi), has many tight corners, and almost nothing to crash into :)
It was built as a motorcycle track, but is now open to cars too.
And we love it because it's safe, slow'ish and technical.

It's also a bi-directional track, and they change direction every 6 months which is great leveller.
Just as you think you've got the answer, they change the question. :)

The STI's and the Evo in the video are all about 600hp, so it was a forlorn hope for me to stay with them because I've only got half that power, but I had more local knowledge and my 86 is quick in the twisties.
It was fun anyway, and I nearly hung with the big boys.

The video starts on our warm-up up, so we only put the hammer down about 2 minutes into the video.

I'm quite an old wrinkly, so the music is from my era, and is one of my favourites.
I hope you enjoy the video. :)

I've added a pic of my car and the track layout.
Guess what the section between T4 and T8 is called? :)

Track: Canadian Tire Motorsport Park Driver Development Track (CTMP DDT)
Car: 2014 BRZ
Mods: 17x9 GTF1 wrapped with 255-40-17 R-S3, RCE Tarmac 2 coilovers
Notes/Comments: Tires & suspension make such a huge difference. Shaved 7 seconds off last year's lap time with stock tires. I start picking up the pace around the 5 min mark. Would appreciate any feedback if you guys see room for improvement.

PIR from this weekend. Second time there. Was trying to get under 1:40 but most of the day there was lots of slow traffic or letting by fast cars. This was my fastest lap with a lot of mistakes and greasy prius tires.

Wow looks like a fun and intense track. One corner after the other. Nice driving.
