Review: FT-86 SpeedFactory 11 lb Battery Kit

General Features:
  • 19 lbs shaved off your vehicle (stocker is 30 lbs)
  • This battery replacement kit is elegantly simple and intended for those who track the car.
  • Installs in 10 minutes and fits perfectly into the stock location.
  • Includes all hardware necessary to install the battery securely and safely.
  • Quality of the materials used is top notch.
The story:

A few months ago I ran across a post that stated they were developing a light weight battery kit for the twins and I decided to email them and ask for more information. They responded immediately with answers to any questions I had and were willing to send out an early version of the kit to test out (and since I was heading to HPDE soon). The kit arrived promptly and I actually installed it at the track in the pits before the run groups started going out. It was a breeze to install (~10 mins) and boy does it look good. Some people parked next to me came over and said, it looks small but also looks stock. They gave the kit a thumbs up too.

Combined with my single exit muffler delete and all the junk in the trunk removed I shed 70-75 lbs that day for the event. Not too bad for simple, inexpensive, functional modifications. The car just felt so nimble out there. I want to shed even more weight now!

Reliability:

The battery is an 11 lb Braile. I have been driving around with it for 2 months now with no change. It runs like stock. No problems with cold mornings. No problems starting it up. Just like stock.

Conclusion:

A must-have no-brainer for those that track their car and care about making this car handle on rails.

Awesome! What a huge difference in size and weight. I gotta have one. Did you keep or sell your stock battery?

Thanks for the review. :)

We got a couple other good track day / autocross items coming out as well this spring.

Is this one of those Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries?

NeedsmoreCowbell 12-11-2012 06:44 PM

is it gel?

We are using the AGM Braille Battery in this kit. It's a lead-acid.

Keeps the cost of the kit down, and reduce weight a fair amount.

I love this man, I'll definitely pick one up when I get the car, great price for most of the weight loss of much more expensive setups.

So this is okay for DDing? I am to lazy to swap batteries before a run.

I saw it, just wanted to clarify just in case I misread his post. I sometimes have moments of illiteracy when pre coffee/monster

We tested it extensively in daily driver mode. It works just fine.

Just don't sit with the car off blasting the radio, headlights on, and etc for extended periods of time. :)
