Alternatives to Toyota 86 / Subaru BRZ

I live in New Zealand and don't have money to buy a Toyota 86, being a university student.

I will get one few years down the line, when they're used and are around 20,000 NZD,

but until then I want a coupe that's comparable to it, less then 10,000 NZD.

My requirements are rwd, coupe and manual. (preferably light weight)

I've been searching and came up with:

mr2 NA, s14 silvia NA, s15 silvia NA, r33 skyline rb20de.

So which one should I get????? And more suggestions are welcome :thanks:

If I were you, I'd go with the S15 Silvia, and here's why: bombproof reliability, fantastic car to drive, tons of aftermarket support, and near limitless tuning capabilities.

The BMW 318ti is fairly close, especially with the M sport package. But it's both low power and rather portly being a BMW.

S15 is a great choice, but spend a little extra and get the Spec-R (turbo SR20). You'll thank yourself for that decision as the NA SR20'd S15s are anemic and don't respond all that well to tuning (not like the turbo SRs).

Grey market Suzuki Cappucino.

Lightweight + front engine + RWD = fun.

It's totally the same thing as the Twins.

Totally.

Heh...

S15 SR20DET, i will have one someday...

I really don't like convertibles...

and as for the s15, how bad is NA compared to turbo?

I would prefer to own NA... because less lag and less things to go wrong...

ALSO, ARE SKYLINES (NA) WORSE TO DRIVE THEN SILVIAS?

Ever consider an Altezza/IS300? Not sure which one you have down in New Zealand but I would say it's fairly comparable, you'll get 190-220HP depending on whether it's the 2JZ or BEAMS 3SGE. Even though it's not a coupe, it's decently light and has actual usable rear seats. Roughly 3000lbs for the 3SGE variant to 3250 for the 2JZ variant, RWD, Toyota reliability, double wishbone on all four corners.

I love the dash of the IS300, looks like a mechanical watch and is classy.

S14-S15 NAs will yield anywhere from 140HP to 170HP depending on whether you get something with a KA24 or a SR20DE and engine revision. Can't say I've seen many S13/14 that aren't bagged on, I don't expect too much different for the S15.

Altezza would be a good option too but I still like the S15 it is one of my all time favorites.

Thanks I didn't even think about the altezza.

Would you get the RS200 (yamaha tuned one) or the Silvia s15 NA?

As I said, I really prefer NA over Turbo.

If you want a driving experience similar to the Twins I would suggest a Miata. It's not a coupe but it is a two door and there's nothing wrong with a top down when conditions are right. The only people that put down the Miata are people who have never driven one.
