Seriously...what's the first thing to break???
I'm asking mostly because my turbo kit is soon to be here, and I am wondering what, if anything has broken due to the strain of 400+ HP and 300+ ftlbs of torque. It's been tough to follow every turbo build thread and I had followed AP's thread up until they broke a shift fork or something in the transmission from accidentally jumping the car. I don't consider the clutch as a component to worry about because I already have a Clutchmasters FX400 6 puck clutch ready to install once my turbo kit arrives. My question is based more around the driveline/gears/and crank bearing surfaces.
My first concern is for the final drive gears. Has anyone who has been running these power figures monitored rear diff condition and wear on the gears? Does the transmission show signs of wear or stiff shifting? How about the bearings in the rear axle carriers? I know some of this may have been answered, but the search function is pretty much showing me nothing of note. Or is this car really built for this kind of punishment? |
so far i don't think anything has broken. i would say that most likely the first thing to break will be axleshafts on a bad launch, but they haven't gone yet. so far all the big power guys are only changing clutches

Slight thread jack, how about on a AT? From what I've read, the AT can handle a bit more upgraded power than MT due to the torque converter vs clutch.

Damn...I still need an oil cooler...wonder what P&L is cooking up, last time I talked to them they said they had a prototype...

With the sounds from all the fast cars, looks like the stock diff mounts and motor mounts will need an upgrade right after the clutch. And don't bang up the gearbox, because it isn't designed for constant beating on high hp.

i think the head gaskets will eventually go from all the boost or the piston rings won't be able to handle the boost after some time. the two normal items to go on a boxer motor. in due time though. you can put plenty of miles on before these will show signs of wear.

"That 100 shot of NOS blew the welds on the intake"

yeah the auto i think has seen 400whp without an issue, but it was ONE pull, i would like to see the amount of heat generated from that pull in the transmission :D vs stock |
I just bought forged pistons and gaskets to go along with it. I think I'll be safe for a while. As soon as I get a clutch in there, I'll jump from 325whp to 400 and I'll call it a day power wise.
Hopefully just oil changes and being smart about everything from here on out. I'll likely upgrade stuff here and there to make sure everything operates smoothly for as long as possible. |

Could you tell me right quick what would be a better motor for my Skyline, a Gallo 12 or a Gallo 24?
