In the event of an accident, one must be able to take ones mangled body and climb through the car, drop the back seats and exit through the trunk. I completely understand their reasoning.

It must have nothing to do with kidnapping.

that's interesting considering our cars, you can't drop the rear seats from inside the cabin...
