Like you, I am going to walk away at $200k but unlike yours, I will go get a Thai-made year 2013 model Corolla. :) I am anticipating that prices will fall to $120k in '15-'16. Until then, I am hoping it's not all a pipe dream! Haha! ;) |
$25 grand in America for the BRZ?! To a Singaporean, that's small change and bargain of the century. Darn.

hello everyone,
tks mockngbrd for introduction to this forum. yes i love the look of GT86 and I like the look of celica and MRS although I never own one before. i really hope the pricing of this car is within my reach and the coe can drop by another 10k~20k by 2013 would be nice. looking forward to drive and own the 86 and have a 86 meet in kallang. :) |
Welcome, FireHorse! Kallang meet sounds good. :)

personally i doubt they will price the 86 near the Mini Coupe.
S$15k~S$20k lower than mini coupe will be my take. If same price as Mini Coupe, I will go for the mini with lower road tax. |
According to sgcarmart article. Subaru brz expected in Q2 2012.

This pricing discussion is really tiresome.
If the US price is approx $30K (SGD$40K). Then add 100% OMV + 40% import duty. = SGD$96K Then add COE (@$70K)= $166K.....before delivery costs, road tax and GST. I think price will be $180K at current COE. |
sigh! with the quota for COE expected to be lower this year.... the dream of owning this car is dwindling.
reading threads in other countries, is an envy to see pricing in $30k~$40k range. |
Precisely. And they're still complaining US$25k is expensive ! I was like wtf?? 25k & u're complaining it's expensive?? :mad0259:
They should come to Spore & see if they can even afford a Picanto :D |
Hey guys,
Am another FT86 owner-wannabe in Singapore. Man, I hope it doesn't hit 200K, kinda defeats the purpose of the car... |
Welcome on board Maverick28 !
|
It is increasingly depressing when the hope of buying one diminishes with each round of COE bidding. Granted, Borneo Motors will not have problems shifting the entire lot even at $200,000 apiece but alternatives are plenty out there at this price point.
|
Just called Subaru and asked abt the BRZ. They are taking pre-orders now just like Toyota. No word on pricing but I asked the salesperson to give an educated guess, and he did say it will approach 200K. :( No way will I be able to afford that.
|
Hi all..... noticed about this toyota-subaru car sometime back... so decide to check more on the web and happen to notice this forum.... read on the carbuyer on this ride as well... hope the price would be more affordable, since it is a NA car......
|
Welcome, autumnkoup! ;)

Latest update: the number of CAT B COEs available for bidding in the next six months starting February will be cut from 706 to 699 per month, adding further pressure on existing sky-high premiums. It appears to me now SGD200,000 might be way too optimistic. It's a dog-gone scenario.
|
Mebbe there's still light at the end of the tunnel. Quote from CNA "LTA said the next COE quota announcement for the COE bidding period from August 2012 to January 2013 will be made in July 2012". That's when GT86 will be arriving & hopefully LTA will increase quota for CAT B then :)
|
fingers crossed and lets see how the COE would fare for by end of Feb.....

Alternatively, plump for the 1.6-liter, 136hp Hyundai Veloster coupe which is rumored to hit town in March '12 at a wallet-friendly S$120,000.
Turbocharged, 201 hp Veloster 1.6 (photo) will arrive later in the year; prices are unconfirmed yet but should match Volkswagen's 160hp, entry-level model Scirocco 1.4 TSI's pricing of S$160,000 or there round about. Hyundai's new six-speed dual clutch 'box is standard across the range. All told, blown Velo is lotsa bang for your bucks! :) http://i1140.photobucket.com/albums/...2/6cca0b5f.jpg |
Base model Veloster has a rival in the form of '12 Suzuki Swift Sport (photo).
Tipping the scale at a featherlight 1,100kg, Swift Sport gets a new naturally-aspirated, 134hp 1.6-liter mill. Given Suzuki's newfound flair in chassis tuning, the sporty sub-compact hatch should out-handle its Korean rival. Prices per current models. Expect a September '12 launch date. You see, unless you are a hardcore drifter, the S$200k, 2.0-liter 197hp GT86/BRZ is increasingly difficult to justify. Just saying... http://i1140.photobucket.com/albums/...2/b534654f.jpg |
And then there is the 2012 Renault Megane RS265 coupe (photo) arriving in mid-2012. Boasting 265hp from its turbocharged 2-liter lump, Wearnes Automotive will be asking S$180,000 for the most powerful Megane built to date.

hyundai's veloster should be considered as a hatchback, but do not expect its power to be like ft86.... =)
|
Hatch notwithstanding, Ferrari FF is one furious beast! ;)

I think if 120k for the veloster not really worth it leh. Cos if I add a bit more, can get a 2.0L Honda civic. But looks wise, the veloster wins.
Anyone got any latest update/rumours from BM? |

Still, Euro Civic hatch with a turbocharged engine could be in the pipeline. :search: |
anyway... i feel that the FT86 or BRZ without TC is really a waste, they should have an option for TC... but i believe with the light weight, this ride is somebody.....

Hi I'm from Australia and I don't understand why it's so expensive for you guys to buy cars in Singapore.
I've been to Singapore about 6 months ago for a holliday. And you guys have crazy nice cars :) Is it to do with pollution, environment standards or is the government trying to screw the people. Here in oz the car may cost about $40,000* AUD + $2500 to insure, regostration, stamp duty. TOTAL $42,500AUD on the road !! *Car cost is a gestimate. |
Hi EP3R, great to see an Australian on board ! U're from Melbuorne? I was there for 2 years. Stayed at Glenferrie. Very nice place u got there.
If you love cars, Singapore is definitely not the place to be, unless u're rich. Basically the government's trying to control the number of cars on the road. Their so called "solution" is to to make car buyers buy Certificate Of Entitlement (COE). COE for a 2.0 litre car now costs about S$65k. So COE + a typical 2.0 litre Honda Civic today costs about S$135k. That's not the end of the sad news. This COE is only valid for 10years. So if u want to keep the car for another 10 years, u got to buy another COE again. ..as to where this COE $$ go to, I think u can make a good guess :D |
Thanks sazu for filling me in on the info.
Come to australia and just live here.lol. Nice house $500,000 in Melbourne ,Australia. Car $40,000 Get your passports ready Best news is the car will be yours for ever until you want so sell it. |
I know EP3R. Affordable cars, affordable houses, friendly cashiers  Very tempted to live there but I can't possibly leave my family behind :)
I'll definitely visit Melbourne again. |
So true
|
Hi EP3R, nice to see u here..... yes u r right and cars had indeed cut a gigantic hole in a lot of Singaporeans pockets.....
|
was at the gas station this morning & noticed an Evo Singapore magazine. On it's cover was a picture of the GT86 & above it was a print that captured my attention. It says sumthin like this " Rear Wheel Drive Thrill That Won't Break Your Bank".
Won't Break Your Bank? I'll believe it when I see it (price tag) myself. |

Granted Australia has cheaper housing (although Singapore has well priced HDB)....the interest rate for mortgages is over 7%!.....and only about 1-1.5% in Singapore. Do the maths. Cars are definitely more expensive here in Singapore....but 10 year financing at nominal interest rates make monthly payments LESS than Australia.....not to mention PARF and COE rebates for early scrapping. Oh....and then there's the BIG issue with working in Australia.....TAX! (if anyone in Singapore wants to pay 30-50% of their income to tax then be my guest). It's all about taking the good with the bad. |
Hi Hounddub,
Welcome to the Lion City; please make yourself at home! ;) Which one of the trio you are most likely to buy: GT-86, BRZ or Hyundai's Veloster? Individual-wise, I am sorely tempted by the Veloster. Despite it only making 136hp, the 1.6-liter all-aluminum mill is good enough for me, at least in Singapore. :burnrubber: Apparently, Americans are snapping up 1.6L Velosters like hot cakes - Hyundai USA sold 10,000 Velos during the model's first full year on sale. Meanwhile, Autocar UK gives 4.5 stars (out of a possible 5) to the 1.6 GDi as tested here: http://www.autocar.co.uk/CarReviews/....6-GDi/260998/ :offtopic: See what you think of it. :word: |
