Toyobaru have two new competitors in 2013 and 2014.

Come '13, Fiat will sell the impossible drop dead goreous Alfa Romeo 4C small two-seater coupe. Featuring Alfa's turbocharged, 1.8-liter 4-pot 1750TBi engine, the 4C is bestowd with 230hp and decimates the century sprint in 4.5 seconds. Sub-5 seconds timing are not surprising given 4C's rumored kerb weight of just 900 kg - that's almost 300 kilos leaner than the GT-86! :respekt:

Alfa's 4C is destined for production and goes on sale in 2013.

Mazda will inject fresh enthusiasm into the MX5-Miata brand by rolling out an all-new car in 2014 or there round about. To be built with state-of-the-art all-encompassing SkyActiv technologies, 'ND' MX5-Miata will ride on a RWD'd SkyActiv platform and loses the current weighty 1.8-and 2.0-liter engines for smaller, fuel-efficient SkyActiv gasoline unit developing about 130hp. A turbocharged 1.5 is also said to be on the cards. Like the 4C, the new 2-seater roadster will take advantage of lightness to offer a competitive power-to-weight ratio. Mazda is aiming for a sub-1,000 kg target on the Miata, with one insider claiming the figures of 800 kg! :confused0068:

Toyota fording ahead with direct-injection downsized turbochargers

http://i1140.photobucket.com/albums/...GRMN-Yaris.jpg

Toyota is rumored to be working on a slew of new downsized, turbocharged engines.

This school of thoughts has gained traction recently boosted by an article in The Detroit Bureau.

According to the report, the next generation Corolla is widely expected to receive Toyota's first downsized, direct-injected turbocharged engine. A blown unit will also be introduced into the 2012 Camry lineup as an option without waiting for a full model change.

Meanwhile, Toyota has pulled together a turbocharged Yaris sub-compact with the help of GRMN, or Gazoo Racing Masters of Nuburgring. Industry observes say the one-off, 178 hp Vitz Turbo Concept (photo) is a sign of things to come from Toyota.

Our road tax might increase if LTA were to implement this : http://www.greenbusinesstimes.com/20...ased-tax-news/

Apparently, I lacked understanding in this subject as the folks on the thread here were praising the low rate of drivetrain loss: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3416

:sigh:

As far as I understand, the proposed emissions-based tax could become an add-on component to the costs of a new vehicle in addition to payable excise duties.

This is probably a one-time only payment. One could interpolate that it has the potential to replace the current engine size-based road tax regime but there is no official word on this topic yet.

The aforementioned tax, also known as carbon tax, punishes high CO2 tailpipe emissions but encourages adoption of cleaner and greener vehicles such as hybrids.

UK, for example, exempts vehicles with less than 100g/km of CO2 emissions from road tax and London's congestion charges.

Anyone saw yesterday's Straits Times (28th Jan)? I missed it but there was a report for the basic car price of GT86.

$170,000
The rest of the world must be laughing at us now.

Got this info from mycarforum ( http://www.mycarforum.com/index.php?...&#entry4222798 )

yes, i also did the math on mcf... comparing a new 86 with a mid 2008 BMW 125i Coupe from PML.

Here's a used 125i:

depreciation according to the ad is approx 15k a year.

A brand new 86 is going for 170k, take into account an rough OMV value of $32,000 (i'm just guessing) , your depreciation is $15,240. Even if optimistically, OMV is $35,000, your depreciation will be approx $15,075. Quite similar to the BMW no? But of course a big disadvantage of the BMW will be the road tax.

I really like the 86, but one of it's selling points and key development milestones was to have it at a price point within reach of young people. Unfortunately, at $15,000+ a year depre, there are many other cars out there worth considering. MX5s, RX8s, Fairladies, BMWs and maybe at a stretch, Elises, 1st generation Boxsters. If you want to go even further back in time, FC/FD RX7s too. All great cars to drive and have fun in. All RWD.

If talking about warranty of new car vs no warranty of old cars, imo, buyers of the 86 are probably gonna throw the warranty into the bin once it steps out of the showroom. And BMWs without warranty, there are many competent BMW specialist workshops out there. If warranty bugs you, then by all means go for the new car.

I'm not the only one comparing the 86 with used cars, even the latest issue of REV SPEED is comparing the 86 with a selection of new and used sports cars at different price points and where the 86 fits in.

I really enjoyed the day I did it too. The guys at BM told me that the people registered on the web registration form will be invited to the official launch too.

mockngbrd 02-09-2012 02:34 AM

any updates from BM?

sazu 02-10-2012 04:08 AM

nothing from me. I lost hope after the last COE bidding

Maverick28 02-10-2012 10:47 PM

@sazu

Me too... I'm already starting to look at alternatives...

Who knows, this might be a blessing in disguise, a few years later when COE falls back to normal levels, there might be a supercharged or STI version...
