Remote Start Anyone?

has anyone tried to install remote start on their FRS/BRZ?

i have never had a car with remote start, but have always loved the idea. im a bit of a weenie when it comes to the cold...and having the ability to warm up the engine and the inside of the car before i get in would make me uber happy .

what are some of the challenges with this? im a noob at this sort of thing, but i imagine this might be difficult to achieve since the clutch has to be disengaged to start the engine ?

any thoughts?

It's usually only a contact switch that tells the Ecu that the clutch is depressed and allows it to start. Usually that switch is bypassed when remote start is installed. Overall there are some positive and negative things with remote start, one of which is if you forget that you leave the car in gear lol I had a friend do that once, and it was hilarious!

Any decent remote start system available today will sense the car in gear and abort the ignition attempt. I do not recommend using one that doesn't.

Just curious how cold can it be on mornings in SoCal?

Here in Canada in can go down to 0 degrees F (-30 Celcius) so I could see the point of having a remote starter but in SoCal ?

Am not a fan anyway of remote starter. Makes engine idle too long (bad for engine/bad for pollution). Driving the car makes engine climb to optimal temp much faster.

For Canadian winters, I personaly prefer the combo battery heater/inside 120v electric heater. Installing it this week-end. No pollution and car interior gets warmer AND windows aren't frosted in the winter mornings.

Indeed we do, and Alcantara is much nicer to sit on in the cold than leather, I can tell you that!

I know a guy that had his gear fail-safe dissabled on his Eclipse, idiot. His girlfriend drove it and left it in gear when parked, next morning he started it up from his house and it jumped the curb. Ruined his expensive front end.
All that being said, I really want a remote start. I've heard theres some out there that you can get an app through your phone and it works from miles away. Would be pretty bad-ass.

Viper's Smartstart and Compustar's DroneMobile are two such systems that let you use a smartphone app to geolocate, remote start, and perform other functions/notifications.
