Misfire

Just took delivery a few days ago of my 86 and problem already :(

Started misfiring at idle and engine check light coming on, took back to toyota and they suspect VVT-I gear which they are shipping out and going to change. Anyone in SA had same problem? I am not convinced it is a gear issue as it only does it at idle and is intermittent. Maybe someone in SA has had similiar problem.

I spoke to SAV recently about a misfire type feel to the car in idle, which we both assumed due to aircon switching on and off. Mine definitely does not sound the same issue.
I did see on the forum under general topic that some guys were having a similar issue you are experiencing, which was pointing to a faulty

Thanks, interesting V3rgil about your problem and response of redlining before 1600km. Mine has only done 220km and has not been over 4000rpm whilst I have had it. I wonder if this could end up been a recall as a vehicle I test drove seemed to shudder once or twice. @ Ryan86, keep a close eye on this rev dip as that seems to be the way mine started and then just dropped radically causing engine check light to come on. Once engine is above +/- 1300rpm the light goes out and all seems well. Will keep you guys posted about the outcome and thanks for all the advice/help.

normally the 86 demo cars are driven in for 2000 km before potential customers can get their hands on them so it should be fine to rev them. (as told to me by a toyota sales guy)

Jono 11-22-2012 01:58 AM

Not sure but it had less than 100km on the odo, not the same vehicle that I have purchased though. They still had a specific route as toyota policy is car must have less than 100km on odo or will be sold as pre owned.

Afzal 11-22-2012 02:50 AM

the one i test drove had 1200kms on it, and i gave it hell. (well i wasn't going to, but the salesperson gave me her permission. :-)
mine does that when the aircon is on as well, but the rev counter moves a fraction. What fuel are you putting in?

the rev dip is normal, whilst the air-con is on, like with any other car the revs dip for a second as it kicks in.

@Afzal, haven't put any fuel in yet, still using the tank I got form the dealership.
They have confirmed today that it is one of the cam gears and have received the part so will hopefully get car back by tomorrow. This to me would not be a fuel problem though, it is definately to do with timing. Previous experience with bad fuel has been a jerky vehicle throughout rev range. They did also confirm the error code of P0019.

Welcome

Have you redlined the engine at all?

Jono 11-22-2012 06:07 AM

@sav No, never been above 4000rpm since I have had it. Can't obviously speak for previous 26km that it had on it when I got it.

Give the car till 2000km to loosen up, if you feel something is not right take it back.
I did feel the engine was not smooth at first but as km clocked the motor got a whole lot better. I drove today for the first time without the aircon and definitely did not feel that Miss compared to when the aircon is running.

Out of curiosity has anyone had there car dyno tuned? Wondered if this would make a slight improvement on performance?

Cool, somebody mentioned that a spring or something on the cam gear pops out if you redline it withing the first 1600km. Not sure what would change after 1600km but you never know.
