Radar Detectors

Just wondering if anyones running radar detectors/scanners in Canada. They're illegal in Ontario

I have used one for a few years now. Not that I speed excessively, but it has slowed me down a few times. The are not a problem in the west (BC, Washington and Oregon).

Got the Escort Redline... Works great but I take it down during the day while driving thru the city in the event of a cop pulling up beside/behind me

Bel STI Driver. Hard wired and next to my A pillar. Had cop pull me over for red light, come up to my car and not notice it ( I think they're inherently stupid).

are these like undetectable? can you take picture of your hardwire thing - thats funny haha

Just FYI, a radar detector, no matter what brand, is not detectable by means other than it being seen. A radar detector just a receiver and does not emit any sort of signal for police to detect. A scanner, on the other hand, may send out a signal which could then be detected, but I am pretty sure it is also just a receiver and therefore shouldn't be detectable. And a radar jammer definitely sends out a signal, can easily be detected, and are illegal pretty much universally anywhere.

GPS enabled redline escort is highly rated .... I have never used one but definitely gonna get one

BS...

Scanner just picks up police radio frequencies, so you can hear the pigs yapping. Will give no indication of their proximity to you unless they state their location in their conversation. Only useful if you're planning a bank heist.

No such thing as a radar jammer. There are laser jammers though for LIDAR.

Radar detectors that do not explicitly state they are undetectable WILL BE DETECTED by the SpectreIV radar detector detectors that police in Ontario run. The radar detector works by a superheterodyne receiver, which has a local oscillator that emits certain frequencies, which, unless they are shielded by the construction of the detector, will be picked up by the police RDD.

So its safe to buy something like the bel STI? Will they ever be detectable after some time? or do they stay undetected for ever - how long have you been running yours?

I use the GX65 but its detectable. The STI magnum is comparable and isn't detectable.

Good radar detectors, like good AM/FM radios, are super-heterodyne receivers, and they all share a common trait. They receive, but they also transmit a signal; it's called "local oscillator emissions." This transmitted signal can be found by another radio if it's tuned to the right frequency. A radar-detector detector is merely a radio tuned to the right frequency range for most detectors.

VG2 is the most famous of the radar-detector detectors.
