Almost at 1000 miles. Oil change when?

I will be reaching the 1000 mile break in period soon and I am debating when I should get a change oil. Suggestions?

I changed mine at 1k. I have heard of others doing it at 500, 750, 1,000 and/or 1,500.
I'd say anywhere from 500-1,500 is good. It's not really needed but I'm anal about the first one and gettin all the little metals out.

I went at 1500, good opportunity to get under the car and poke around a bit too :). Gonna go in for my 5000 oil change also, figure the cleaner the oil the happier the car !!

I changed mine at 1,000 miles but I'll also be the first to agree that it probably wasn't necessary. It's just a habit I formed a long time ago and since it makes me feel good it's worth it.

Never heard of anybody's car blowing up from too many oil changes. As for environmental concerns, please... enthusiasts changing oil early barely puts a dent in canceling out the number of people who change theirs every 10k or 20k miles... if ever.

In all likelihood, the oil that you will be changing to will have a weaker additive pack (unless you use Motul 300V or Red Line) so I would at least run the factory fill to 5,000 miles. Idemitsu even recommends following Subaru's oil change interval guidelines.

Is there a prize for the 25th when do I change my oil thread? :D

If going by the above advice (which I'll probably do), it might be worth putting a new filter in early.

I used to be a member of the early first oil change club. In the past I've changed the oil on a new car at 1,000 miles.

On my BRZ based on some of the UOA's I've seen I went to 5,000 on the factory oil. Even at 5,000 miles my oil was almost clear on the dip stick and putting a drop on a paper towel only resulted in a circle of amber color. Car did not use any oil. The factory level was right in the middle of the full mark hole and at 5,000 miles it was still right at the same spot...amazing.

Did a change using Amsoil 0W-20 SS and a Subaru 130 filter.

Nah, changing the filter early isn't needed either. If I can go 7,500 miles on an OEM Honeywell filter in a turbo (guided by used oil analysis), you can easily go that distance with an OEM Tokyo Roki in a BRZ IMO.

Good to know, thanks.

for the break in period the sooner the better. I did mine at 500 and cut the filter open, had all kinds of metal and filings from manufacturing/break-in. I changed just the filter again at 1k and still had some but not as much. full oil change at 1500 again, minor filings but getting alot less. now have 2500 on my car and am going to change at 3K, then 5K, then every 5K after that. call me over cautious, but when you can physically see the shavings and they are slowly going away I fell alot better about it.

I plan to change oil at 1000 miles, but then what. Sticker on the window says 5000 miles. books says 7500 miles. Which one is right? How many times will Scion change it for free? May need to talk to my dealer, but hoping to find out here.

I just changed my filters at 100mi and 1000mi. No need to change the oil.

Jertronic 08-08-2013 01:31 PM

I had my break in oil change performed yesterday. I am at 1400 on odo. I was anticipating having to pay since the normal interval is 7500 mi or something, but it was free.

In the past the BMW covered maintenance would make me pay out of pocket for any oil changes that were less than their 15K mi standard interval.

Toyota dealership told me that they cover the first 3 oil changes. It seemed like I could have a oil change and whatever interval I choose but they stop covering it after the 3rd oil change. This makes perfect sense actually, but i was surprised nonetheless. Kinda smart and kinda nice.

This tread is almost a full year old
