The cars are fuel-efficient, reasonably priced and all callbacks, despite not always reliable. But it is with pleasure and passion in the model range of Toyota not very far away. Grey mouse boredom and the dictates of reason has led to vehicles like the Yaris and the Auris. Although the strike on the family front quite well, but when they are good accelerator pulse about as much as a tablespoon of valerian.

But that is now closing soon. The at least promises Tetsuya Tada, who just might have the most passionate job in Toyota City. Because Tada is responsible for a new sports car that will soon inherit the legendary Celica and bring a little joy in all the boredom from the Far East. "We aim to the heart," promises the engineer and focuses attention on a black and white plastered prototypes, with whom he has just come from the Nurburgring.

Although it takes only a few weeks until early December, the finished car unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show is, and the sale prices of 30,000 € in spring next year begins. But Tada knows how hard the ordeal has been, "It has far too long no longer apply sports car from Toyota," the engineer apologized for the vacancy, which has begun with the end of the MR-2. "There was simply more important projects, had the precedence."

Three years ago it finally gave the green light and Tada has taken his team to work. The result is a sharp-cut wedge that already looks in stand fast. The flat, racy body is stretched tightly over the chassis and engine and came with a length of only 4.24 meters and 1.80 meters wide and 1.27 meters high, particularly compact. That the internal FT-86 is still called sports cars still running at 2.57 meters wheelbase than four-seater, is at best an excuse for bad conscience of possible fathers. For beyond the baby seat in this fund would certainly nobody crouch. But for this sports car is not about reason, but fun, and takes place only one performance. And since the small size helps: it makes the FT-86 curves in very handy and limited the weight on top of that just under 1,300 pounds.

With millions of miles in all corners of the world wants Tada ensure that the sports car not only looks good but also so moves. He does not rely on high technology, electronics and an excess of power, says the engineer, and complaining of utter boredom on the fast track: "turbocharged, all-wheel drive, performance tires and a lot of electrical tools - so can not go any fast," complains and the developer promises to his car a purist rage. With around 200 hp, about 230 Nm and with luck 230 km / h top speed, the FT-86 may not ride safely in front. "But he feels tremendous to sporty, the driver because he finally moved to center stage," says Tada and gives the driver's seat for once.

What he means by the rediscovered unity of man and machine, one notices moment you enter: Man falls almost into the deep and heavily contoured seats, grind formally on the asphalt, and now has the good sense of control. The steering wheel is well at hand, emerges from a deep pot on the short end of the close-ratio gearbox, and in the cockpit, the instrument determines the image that is the main driver of the sport: the tachometer.

Anyone who has ever behaved in the eye of the needle always stops and over 3,000 tours, the FT-86 actually experienced as a car that makes your heart beat again slightly higher. Reliable and predictable especially you can drive the coupe over the course. It cuts through the precise curves depends on the gas well at high revs and can be tolerant in the switching stages of the stability of electronics with the foot on the accelerator and bring a little bit from the rest. Prius drivers for this may be hell. But who has formerly loved the Celica, which is also like the FT-86.

That this coupe not only looks fast, but fast driving, but there is a thinner, lighter and very free-revving boxer engine that Toyota has ordered his daughter's Subaru. Which takes over the construction of the 2 +2- seater and gets just as the youthful Scion brand has its own U.S. subsidiary of the firebrand. "The boxer was the best choice for us," says Tada, the design principle, on the other swears by the Porsche sports car just yet. "Only with its flat design, we were able to reduce the emphasis so far. And a slim hood we might otherwise not even job. "
Although the FT-86 moves in the wind shadow of the Lexus LF-A far behind. But just as their colleagues with their civilized Formula 1 racing car was traveling with his hot Tada rice cooker not only on main roads and motorways. "Of course, we have tested our car on the Nordschleife," he says engineer ". And we had lots of fun"

well, the "focus" is more a political magazine in germany, not like car and driver.
I would not bet on the specs mentioned in that article

Wow the price for this car in European contries seems rather high. Is it cause of import tax or just because shipping it there cost a lot.

Maybe it's the German "no fun tax" so they stay serious with their BMW's and Mercedes.

taxes in germany are very high. 19% high. That is why i choose to shop on base. I am not sure about cars but if 19% is also for cars that would suck. good thing i should be back in the states within a year of this car being released.

The Tacoma has the oil filter in the same spot. Toyota likes it to be easy to change.
