watched Ron Howard's Rush yesterday...what a movie...HIGHLY recommended and you don't have to be an F1 fan for it to stir your soul

The closing laps to Monaco 2011 is my favorite F1 race, Vettel in the lead on old tires, Alonso catching with fresh tires, Button catching even harder on fresher tires, all three nose to tail with 5 laps to go was going to be spectacular.

Then Petrov stuffed it into a wall, red flag came out and the FIA said it was ok to change your tires and we returned to 5 of the most frustrating parade laps of my life.

:sigh:

Monaco is usually pretty boring though, it's exciting to see guys run around the track at full bore but after that it's just a parade with some pit stops and a collision or two (well, maybe 3 or 4 with Maldonado on track.)

Indeed. Monaco is just a very expensive car show. They should install sprayers and make the Monaco Grand Prix a mandatory wet race because only 1 in 20 dry races is exciting.

What lap will Maldonado crash on? I say the uni-brow crashes before lap 30.

As for the Indy 500. There's just something about open-wheel cars on an oval that turns the excitement of motorsport into the excitement of golf. I guess it's the way I perceive the function and design of an open wheel (and winged) race car that being an oval is the antithesis of it's function. I think for the Ovals they should just take the wings off. That would be a lot more exciting.

Now that I think of it, if they took the wings of F1 cars, that would be a lot more exciting too.

Is it the weekend yet?

I wonder what the Vegas odds are on Maldonado crashing...

Is it bad that's the only thing I'm looking forward to out of this GP weekend? Lol

I'll take laps 7-12.

I'd wager the average oval race is more interesting to me than the average road course race, but I've given up trying to explain, either high speed chess excites you or it doesn't.

That's charitable given his history there.

When I lived in Europe I went to Monaco. It might be a ridiculous place to demonstrate anything but crash worthiness of an F1 car (the exception being Senna in the rain), but the atmosphere is astounding. The men are all James Bond, the women Princess Stephanie for a day. I couldn't actually afford a hotel there and instead stayed in more affordable Nice and in the days before the GP drove the course in my VW Bug. Woo-hoo.

I've also been to Indy. Hard to see the race given the size of the oval, facility and speed of the cars although still exciting from my Turn 1 seat to see corner entry and the line through the short chute until they went out of view.

Still, I'm really looking forward to an epic TV day Sunday. Not as much as for Le Mans next month, but still pumped.

He's also a race winner and a former champion in a lower series, his history is pretty hit and miss (although hitting is definitely winning right now).

He could score points this weekend, he could stuff it into turn one, nothing is unbelievable from Maldonado.

I stand by my wager, I take it yours is lap 1?

I'd place an over under bet on how many crashes from practice to checkered flag at >1.5

Depends how he qualifies. If he's in the fourth row or back then yes, Lap 1, Turn 1. If he somehow manages to make Lap 2, then he'll eventually eat it in a high speed section like Sainte Devote, Nouvelle Chicane or La Rascasse.

Not wishing him bad luck, he manages that on his own, just playing the odds based on his history there and understanding where better drivers than him have come to ruin.

LOVING the Maldonado memes...keep 'em coming

Silver Ignition 05-24-2014 10:03 AM

Pole Position goes to Nico!

....now he's gotta change his shorts after cheating death...
