I read somewhere that one of the teams at least is possibly fitting a megaphone on the exhaust for better sound.

One reason the new engines sound so quiet I believe is the HERS system, which uses extra exhaust energy to spin a generator (which at times becomes a motor to spin the turbo up for no turbo lag).
Instead of the extra exhaust exiting the wastegate, the turbo is slowed instead to maintain the proper boost levels. The turbo is instead slowed by increasing loads, by gearing the motor/generator higher, spinning the generator faster to charge the battery. |
Steve Mattchet sums up the issue/resolution about these cars being "too quiet."

Well,....... Maldanado stuffed another Lotus into the wall this morning during qualifying. Don't know who got pole as my electricity went off due to construction of an addition to my house..........
Drivers: 1 - Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes); 2 - Daniel Ricciardo (Red Bull Racing); 3 - Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull Racing) |
Lewis got pole, Rosberg very close second. Ricciardo eeked out third, and the Ferraris were embarrassingly middle of the pack. Though Kimi finally out qualified Alonso (who hasn't had a teammate out qualify him in 10 years according to the commentators), Fernando always shines better on Sundays than Saturdays.

While we're stuck with the changes this year, I'm all for anything that will make the cars sound better.
I watched Indy cars today, and they have the same engine configuration and they actually sound a lot better than the F1 engines. I just hope they change things back to good sounding sooner than later. Quote:

Matchett is right.
Artificially making these cars louder is the equivalent to slapping on a ricer fart can. The quiet is good it does two things: A) Proves that you can make power without making ridiculous noise (Someone should call Harley Davidson and tell them that). B) It allows me to hear other things I've never heard before like screeching tires when they lock up, the sounds the cars make when Maldonado runs into them and the roar of the crowd when Alonso passes Kimi. I think it's really nice to hear something besides just engine noise. Maybe we should focus less on making the cars louder and focus more on making Leigh Diffey quieter! |

Wait the country that houses and develops 16/22 cars including the championship winners back to 2009 as well as current championship leaders are disappointed? |

Anyone else supremely pissed at how Ferrari treated Kimi this past weekend? Ferrari should know by now to put some faith in Kimi, he is their last champion after all.
