Wondering if I'm the only one with this problem

So for the first 4k on this car it was a blast, the last 3k I put on it have been hell, when I shift outta first there is a faint horn honking sound, I have taken it into the shop 3 time already. They tell me they can't figure it out. It's enough of a noise to make me think I'm going crazy. I looked in the problems on this site and saw that someone else was having this issue but they haven't figured it out either.

I'm fusterated to the point of using the lemon law, the dealership want me to pay for diagnostics which I refuse since its a new car and under warrenty

Anyone else got any ideas?

(It goes back into the shop Monday at 7:30am)

Unfortunately this isn't going to qualify for lemon law.

WA Lemon Law:
Your vehicle may qualify as a “lemon” if it has one or more significant defects that have been subject to a “reasonable number of attempts” to diagnose or repair the problem(s) covered under the manufacturer’s warranty. The law covers only defects that “substantially impair” the use, value, or safety of the motor vehicle.

You might try contacting Scion or Toyota directly, or try a different dealership. I would post about this in the main FR-S/86 forum though, you'll reach a broader audience and maybe someone has seen this.

have you tried changeing/checking your fliuds? have you taken the shift boot off to see if maybe the reverse lockout may be rubbing something? (just throwing some speculations out there...)

I've taken it to 3 different dealerships, there I a post hit like it in the main sections someone with the same problem and solution yet. I've tried contacting Toyota no response yet. Maybe Monday they will be able to fix it.

I just passed 4k Miles on my BRZ and she is running great, no complaints. Im actually looking at doing some detailing on the car this week, I want to make my car immune to Rain! I hate rain and it happens ALL the time in Oregon.

Maybe I was just taking things a bit too literally

Yes you're the only one or at least my experience hasn't been like that.

I have the same issue and you're not the only one. There's another thread on the forums about this particular sound and we're trying to track down what it's attributed to.

EDIT: see http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19308

xxmaryduhxx 11-09-2012 07:48 PM

I've looked at that thread. Exact same sound. Drives me insane. I was just hopin I wasn't the only one in the northwest that is having this issue.

xxmaryduhxx 11-13-2012 11:30 AM

Regional guy is gonna look at it today. Atleast I'm making progress now.

So the comclusion is that we were told by Toyota that its just an annoying sound and we will have to deal with it since they have no intention of fixing it. At this point I'm so fed up with Toyota that I'm thinking about trading it in and getting something else.

(Toyota says its the harmonic balancer)

That sucks, I'm sorry they aren't helping you :(

Good opportunity to try a lightweight pulley though, just get rid of that balancer completely. If the noise is still there you can always take it back in and say "look you were wrong, try again."

If you can find a place nearby maybe they'll let you "borrow" a pulley to test and only buy it if you're happy with it. I'm not sure if it's worth the drive all the way down here to do that at Perrin, if they'll let you.

Toyota's fix for the problem

Step 1 insert CD
Step 2 Turn Volume up
Step 3 do you still hear the noise if yes turn up volume 10 notches if not, your done
