American Suzuki Files for Bankruptcy

Wow! That's a big surprise to me!

Suzuki won't be selling cars in the US anymore; their US distributor just filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Oh, you're not surprised? Neither are we. We don't hate the Kizashi and we very much like the not-for-the-USA Swift Sport, but we're not exactly moved by Suzuki's demise in the American car market. They had a tiny lineup, they hardly sold any of what they had, and a poor exchange rate kept the company's costs high.
Everyone's known that Suzuki's been on death watch for ages now.
The US distributor plans to focus on motorcycles, quads and engines. Moreover, existing warranties will be upheld and Suzuki's tiny dealer network will continue to provide parts and services.

That's too bad, but not really surprised, like the article says. I just don't think a "mainstream" company can survive selling small numbers in the US.

My all-time favorite modded offroad "truck" was a Suzuki Samurai that almost ran over me once on a logging road when I was out riding quads with some friends in KY. I came around a corner full throttle on my Polaris Scrambler and ran face to face with a Samurai that had been lifted up on what turned out to be be school bus tires. The engine had also been replaced with a Cummins diesel out of the same school bus!

Sounds like something you'd run into around these parts as well!

That doesn't surprise me. I don't know about today but not too many years ago their motorcycles came in in last place when compared to Kawasaki, Yamaha and Honda.

I could never understand why they still sold cars here. I saw the Swift often when it came out, but it never took the sales from the Mini Cooper like they expected. I always heard the Kizashi had good sales numbers, but I gotta say I don't see them on the road often.

Not surprised since the last popular Suzuki car was the Samurai. Suzuki motorcycles on the other hand are a crowd favorite.

Suzuki said on Tuesday it would use a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing by its U.S. subsidiary in federal court in California to shut down the auto business and to focus instead on sales of motorcycles, All-Terrain Vehicles (ATV) and boats.

Sounds good to me!
