Leaking front left shock

Tonight I was fitting my Tein Coilovers to the 86. Back end went in fine with Cusco lower arms and braces.

On the front the left side shock was leaking quite a lot. I have only done around 5000 km.

Its something that would be worth checking.

Pretty poor to have a leak after such low kilometres.

Cusco lower arms are a pain to tighten the adjuster nuts once in the car. I think they need to be unbolted to tighten the jam nuts properly.

Well that's pretty shit to hear about the Cusco arm design, putting mine in soon too so thanks for the heads up

oh well thats what you have warranty for (the shocks i mean)
i would put it all back to stock and take it to toyota and get the shocks replaced before you modify it further

Did you have steering feel loosen recently? some are reporting significant loosen steering wheel feel which described as "floating".
The shocks bleeding you found might be the cause of loosen steering.
It is damn lame really, I am getting seriously angry over all these issues with 86/BRZ.
It is really the time to reconsider my order before mine delivered end of this month.
really really really disappointing.

Can honestly say I've never seen that happen to any new Toyota I've had before 100k is up and these struts modded sti ! Possibly a dud shock !

my WRX had a leaking front shock at similar K's, replaced under warranty no questions asked.

Nardi330 11-05-2012 08:37 PM

guess this is a Subaru thing rather than Toyota?

JP 11-05-2012 10:20 PM

not really, most people dont notice the leaks as they're covered by the dust boot.

I've seen plenty of Toyota shocks leaking while under warranty. I can't recall who the WRX shocks were made by but most of the Toyota OEM's I've seen have had KYB stamped on them somewhere.

The 86 is fitted with showa ?? shocks. I cant be bothered putting it back to stock just to get a replacement shock.

They will only collect dust now anyway.

More something that 86 owners should keep an eye on.

Angry about a leaking shock?? Wow, you guys to need to relax :s
You do realise they are mass produced parts right?? That means there will be the odd failure..... There is no point making a big deal about. ANY car will have some things go wrong, You have warranty, what's the big deal??
People really like to make mountains out of molehills :s

Surok 11-06-2012 05:15 PM

Its upsetting nonetheless, but it would be resolved under warranty if the owner chose to do that.
