Well...if you could make that the 3rd brake light, I think it would be cool. Not sure if that would be legal though.

If it was red, you would probably not get hassled.

This is nothing new. They did this in the FR-S Concept Car in NY show back in 2011, while the forum here was already talking about de-badging the scion emblems and whatnot. (And it actually happen to many members trying to debadge the scion stuff..)

I know a guy that did this out in New Mexico, not sure if he's a member here or not but he came here to Arkansas for a Scikotics meet-up (he lived here previously). It was red and looked awesome! I'm thinking of doing something similar myself.
