A better BRZ foglight option!
Anyone that has a BRZ knows that the OEM foglights are a little disappointing. Not only do they look dull yellow compared to the HID headlights, but they also are not very bright and due to the odd bulb size (PSX24W) there aren't any easy upgrades available.
But there is a solution! Upgrade to foglights off of a 2011 Subaru Outback! Why you ask? The 2011 Outback uses a more common H11 bulb and has the same mounting points and dimensions as the BRZ foglight, all wrapped in a stronger housing with a glass lens (instead of plastic BRZ lens). Here is a comparison of the two foglights: OEM BRZ Foglight - P/N: 84912FJ100 Weight: 0.24 lbs (Foglight including bulb) Cost (MSRP): $149.95 each (does not include the bulb) Bulb: PSX24W Lens: Plastic Housing: Plastic 2011 Outback Foglight - P/N: 84501AJ00A Weight: 0.54 lbs (Foglight including bulb) Cost (MSRP): $60.18 each (includes bulb) Bulb: H11 Lens: Glass Housing: Composite What do you need to install? 2-Qty Foglights (P/N: 84501AJ00A) 2-Qty H11 Harness pigtails 4-Qty Wire Crimps Tools: Phillips Screwdriver, wire cutters/stripper, electrical tape Steps: 1 - Access back of foglight through wheel well, behind splash guard.. 2 - Unplug fog light, remove 2 mounting screws, remove foglight. 3 - Install new fog light, secure with same two screws. 4 - Cut OEM foglight connector off. Using wire crimps, connect H11 harness. Wrap with electrical tape when finished. 5 - Plug harness into foglight. 6 - Reinstall splash guard. 7 - Done, have a drink. Thanks!
where did you get your H11 Harness pigtails? |
Awesome find!
|
Looks like it was spliced? I could be wrong.
|
Any pics of them on?

How's the color temperature on these lights? I'd prefer something that doesn't require cutting off the stock connectors.

Good find! Thanks for sharing =)

I think I might have to do this conversion myself. The yellow OEM fog bothers me. LOL
Would love to get an H11 bulb that matches the OEM HIDs |

If I was going to do this conversion i would use the PIAA Plasma Yellow H11 bulbs but thats just me. |
you would think subaru would just say heyyy let's take the outback housing and use it to save money!
excellent info. |
Very nice work!

Subscribed.

Subiescribed... I have some spare JPN housings that I want to toss these fogs into. Only problem now is the fact Ive grown into liking the daytime leds and hids might blind more than help in actual foggy areas.

Found this:

Right? |
Now what I am curious about is light output and usability of these new fogs as real fogs versus lenses that just light up for show (I know there is more to it, but for fogs the stock OEM blows!).
|
My opinion is that the fogs are simply too low to be useful. Their output is probably too low compared to the HIDs, but I'm not sure if H11 4000-4200K bulbs will help or just blow out the bottom/side portion of your lights in inclement weather.
|
That kit also looks like either the lenses are smoked or they are black chrome and cost way too much.
|
Can you verify part number of the Outback fog. Page 1 has 2 different numbers 84501A00A and 849501AJ00A. Thanks

Yeah! I can finally get my enduro yellow bulbs back in. I am so doing this!

Just did this:

Definitely not more than an hour project. I am so pleased with the original post. I was pissed when I found out I couldn't buy the normal bulbs I use for Fog Lights (Hoen Enduro). I went through three different sets of PSX bulbs just to settle on that the fogs are useless and I have some amber LEDs in there. Albeit it looks nice, I want usability. Now, I can. Thank you so very much again for the post. I now realize that these fog lights are shared with various cars just like my heater switches. Rock on! |
Let us know if those are the right connectors for the fogs. They look very similar to what is on the back of the fog light and I wonder if they will slide over. I'm wondering if this is on the other end of what you ordered: [ame="http://www.amazon.com/TEMPERATURE-CERAMIC-Headlight-Connector-moisture/dp/B004IA3YQK/ref=sr_1_1?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1351709842&sr= 1-1&keywords=H11+connector"]http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...6L._AA160_.jpg[/ame]

J.R., if you had gone to the Amazon site and done a search for H11 connectors, you would see that they sell an H11 connector that has both style ends on it available for purchase. I only used that picture as a reference, not that you should buy that specific end. My question was only that, a question, because it LOOKS like the end ordered might not fit over the factory connector on the fog lamp. If it will, great, then I'll order the same ones when I do mine because they offer more protection to the connector. Was not being critical......if I had been, I'd a said it looks like you ordered the wrong ends.
|
OK, someone needs to come up with a plug and play pigtail adapter. I know when I bought a set of Euro projector foglights for my MK V GTI from ECS Tuning and they had included a pigtail harness so no cutting or splicing. I'm not a fan of any cutting of wires...like to keep things unmolested.

Why not just install led psx24ws to get white light instead of yellow? I found these on amazon they other day. [ame="http://www.amazon.com/PSX24W-Light-Replacement-Bulbs-White/dp/B006FYI5WU"]Amazon.com: PSX24W 9009 2504 LED Fog Light Replacement Bulbs White (Pack of 2): Automotive[/ame]
I also have noticed that my foglights really dont do much besides look cool. I really wish I could get my led running lights to come on with the headlights... That would be neat. |
Parts are trickling in. Hope to do this conversion this Friday/weekend.
|
I know we can make an adapter for this but if anyone is able to make one of these things; I'm willing to pay for it.
Only way I can think of to make an adapter for this sort of thing is to source out a wrecked vehicle and cut off it's harness for the H11...solder it to a wire on one side but what about the PSX24W side? How can we deal with that side as the other end is suppose to simulate as the bulb side?:iono: |

Received all the parts. Verified they all work good together. Will do the install tomorrow. Will take pictures.
So far, very happy with the quality of all parts. Should take an hour to retrofit both fog lights. |
