Still waiting...

I have wanted an FR-S since I first saw the Greddy car featured in DSport Magazine. It looked amazing and very much what I would have loved to buy back in the summer of 2010 when I bought my first new car (2010 civic si 4 door).

I now work at a Toyota Dealership as a part time tech during school and saw the first FR-S to hit our dealership on may 28th and instantly fell in love. I went that day after work to get a salesman to run my credit and see what payments would be like with my trade in. As soon as I knew it was easily possible for me to afford I got the keys and went on my own private test drive. 25 minutes later I came back and new this was the car for me. But I really wanted to order one in black ( The one I test drove was grey). I ordered my FR-S June 1st and to this day I still don't have it. Over 4 months later!!! Two FR-S showed up with the first month or two (one red, one silver). My sales manager has called corporate to get an explanation for why the order hasn't been filled but I get nothing.

How is it that black of all colors is this hard to get? It's not like I am trying to get the premium white. I just have to keep playing the waiting game and hope I get it by the time it snows here in Kansas. Oh and I am the only person to have ordered one at our dealership the others that have sold were bought right of the lot. I'm a patient guy but this is a little ridiculous.

Anyways guess I just needed to vent and get other people's thoughts on my situation.

Ouch, ordered mine early September and got it last Friday. Sorry, that probably doesn't help. You should get on them or go to another dealership..

Are you looking for stick or automatic?

I was looking for a black stick for months and couldn't get my hands on one...every dealer in southern california had my number and nothing.

Finally one called and said they had a blue one....went in and checked it out and decided to go with it (and after having it now, i do like the blue better than the black)

but when i was talking to a couple different dealers they said they really don't know what cars they are getting until they arrive, the most they know is they are getting 3 automatics and 1 stick.

i was also told that only about 10% of the cars being made are stick...so waiting for a black stick might be a bit hard, especially if all the black ones are out of production, i didn't want to wait to find out that they were so i settled for blue...can always paint it for a couple grand if i decide i don't like it later!

I ordered mine late April and still haven't gotten it yet. But it should be here soon, hopefully. Sometimes it just takes forever.

Unless things have changed since I got my firestorm in September, dealers can't order them. I was told they're allocated a certain number of FR-S's based on their total sales volume and they can't specifically order a car. They are advised in advance of the car they're going to receive and when they're going to receive it but have no say in what color or transmission that car will have. In my case I got lucky. I called a dealer about 100 miles away and told him I was looking for a firestorm manual and he told me he had been notified that he would be receiving one in several weeks. I put a refundable deposit on it and when it came in I saw it, drove it and bought it. Perhaps because you work for them you have more of an inside track and they can possibly work out a swap with another dealer to get the one you want. Either way it's worth the wait. You'll love the car when you get it. Good luck.

My black manual BRZ was ordered in May and I got a VIN about 3 weeks ago and a conformation date that the car would arrive at the dealership between 10-24 and11-05....Subaru dealership said it would probably be somewhere in the middle of them dates....so hopefully a big shipment is coming with FR-S and BRZ's on the same boat...FYI the dealership said that in December they could start taking orders again...so, hopefully all of the other orders when be filled...good luck

Now that things have settled down (June/July dealers got more cars than usual due to a pre-release buildup) most dealers are going to be getting 1-2 cars per month; larger dealers may get more and smaller dealers less. That's "working as intended" by Toyota. The FR-S is not intended to be a high-volume car.

As such, getting a specific color/transmission is going to take patience, and a little bit of luck. From what I've read dealers can request a specific allocation but if it's not available they're not going to get it.

check cars.com. That's how i got mine. Just check it everyday, because the list gets update often.

I would try another dealership dude. I went to two places and both told me estimate of 6-8 weeks. I didnt like the wait time. Went to the biggest dealership in GA, got it within 7 days. Also Im checking the inventory for SE region, there are at least 20 Ravens coming in due for arrival at dealers 10/24 and 11/7

Dealers don't have any control over what they get.

If you get more flexible on color you're more likely to get a car.

DYOLF26 10-23-2012 07:01 PM

I understand if I am more flexible I could have had one over 4 months ago. When I ordered my car my sales manager puts it in the list of cars that are desired to be specifically allocated to or dealership. This is how it works for anyone wanting a specific car. Corporate Toyota twice a month (around the 1st and 15th) looks at these lists and then locks in the allocation of cars to every dealership based on specific wants and sales volume among a few other things.

Our dealership since May has gotten a grand total of 3 FR-S even though we are a rather large dealership with what I have been told a large sales volume as well. When they go to allocate all the manual Ravens to dealerships they are supposed to look at dealerships with orders for them first. It just wouldn't make sense to send them to dealerships without special orders to eventually be sold instead of going to one that already has a customer lined up.

trdfrs 10-23-2012 07:05 PM

you guys make me feel lucky to have mine...it took the dealer 2 weeks. Just be patient it will be worth it when you get it.

Toshiaki 10-23-2012 07:28 PM

Lol know what you mean I waited 7 months for mine. But finally took delivery of it last week.

industrial86 10-23-2012 07:36 PM

jeeeez 7 months?! how did you not seek another dealership.

I ordered mine exactly 1 month ago today, and yesterday they called me and told me it had been allocated and will be arriving within the next 3 weeks.

but i was told scion santa monica gets a lot more FR-S' than other local dealerships.

ULTRA excited
