Separate ECU based on transmission?

I've had the dreaded ECU/CEL problem and my vehicle has been at the dealer for about 17 days.

Last week the ECU finally arrived; however, the installation proved unsuccessful. The vehicle had a solid ABS light and the traction control could not be turned on.

They contacted Toyota and after investigation Toyota claimed that the wrong ECU was installed in my vehicle. Apparently they were installing the ECU for the manual transmission version of the vehicle. They claimed that I needed the automatic version of the ECU and that I would have to wait for that unit to come in. Unfortunately, that specific ECU is on backorder and they have no estimate for when it'll arrive.

Would the ECU/ECM vary based on transmission? The facts do not add up for me.

Anyone with experience care to shed light on this matter?

I am by no means an expert but I know for example that the auto has a higher idle speed and that would be part of the ecu programming. I hope you get the right ecu soon!

Yes ecu is different. Just think of the transmission/paddle shifters etc and all of the extra necessary sensors it has to account for.

Yes it is a different ecu. I had mine replaced and my rep told me there are 2 kinds and in fact they were working on a new one for manual. He didn't know the difference of the new one but it was just for the manual.

Thanks guys. I just assumed it was a single ECU with different maps and tuning for each of the transmission versions.
