New Rumor: Subaru Developing Turbo 4 2.0T for BRZ

Via Automotive News

Quote:

Subaru is developing a turbocharged direct-injection version of its familiar horizontally opposed, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. One use for the 2.0T will be the recently launched rear-wheel-drive BRZ coupe, sources say.

The engine uses a single twin-scroll turbocharger and straight direct-injection developed in-house, rather than the DI/port-injection system engineered with Toyota for the current normally aspirated BRZ and the Scion FR-S.

Tuned for the BRZ, the turbo could generate 280 hp and 250-plus pounds-feet of torque. That would be a significant increase in output compared with the 2.0-liter boxer in the 2013 BRZ, which makes 200 hp and 151 pounds-feet of torque.

The BRZ turbo likely will debut as a 2014 model.

How reliable is automotive news as a source? I have heard this a million times already...

believe it when i see at the dealership (or an official announcement from subie).

Twin scroll turbo + DI 2.0L engine! This is the combination I've been waiting for. Wonder if another application will be the WRX.

It's already been confirmed since earlier this year that there will be a turbo version of the FA20. It's also been confirmed by the Subaru chief engineer that the BRZ will not have a turbo and by the STI president that they will not make a turbo for the BRZ. This can only mean the turbo FA20 will be implanted into another Subaru car (not the BRZ).

do I hear a $30K price tag?

eshtog 10-22-2012 02:20 PM

Wow, I guess now I won't be getting a turbo or supercharge kit for my BRZ.

Foobar 10-22-2012 02:22 PM

Yeah I'm not holding my breath for a Turbo BRZ. Subaru did say they were switching to a turbo 2.0 platform (versus the 2.5) for the other cars in the lineup for fuel economy reasons though, so I wouldn't be surprised to see them there.

This is old news, it's already on Subarus .jp website under the Legacy GT

If "news_day==slow_news_day" then report "turbo_BRZ_coming".

We've got a thread on that Legacy GT engine in Off-Topic.

WRX has been confirmed to be a 2L turbo engine, but they've been mum on the WRX STI. It's entirely possible it may remain a 2.5L turbo to differentiate between it and the WRX; something that's been really lost with the GR/GV generation STI and GH WRX.

Oh and also a turbo BRZ would steal sales from Subaru's flagship - the next Subaru STI.
