Gauge Pods?!?

Ok, so I have a bit of a dillemma. I am prepping my FR-S for a turbo install and just realized that I am going to need some way of mounting some gauges. I have looked and found only some ugly universal mount setups and will only pick one of those up if there is absolutely nothing better.

So I have seen the RHD only gauge pod that replaces the passenger side dash panel and I have to say that, that is exactly what I want. I would even go for an A-pillar mount, but the idea of removing the side curtain airbag for a gauge pod is a little bit worrisome.

So if anyone on here knows of a suitable alternative or would like to make a quick buck and can fab up a 2 or 3 gauge pod for me let me know. If I had any real fabrication experience I would make one myself but I do not...although if nothing seems forth coming i might have to take a crash course in a little fiberglass fabbing;)

RedLeader 10-20-2012 09:04 AM

If nothing presents itself and you end up fabbing your own, give Local Motors a call, I'm sure they could help you get started making your own.

If it were me, I'd look at putting a pod on top of the dash on the center hump, over the radio and air vents. Putting anything over the pillars makes me nervous since that's going to fly at your face if the airbag ever goes off.

TuxedoCartman 10-20-2012 09:45 AM

I was asking about a LHD version of the dash-trim gauge pod setup a while back, and somebody told me they are currently developing one. So it might be worth waiting a few more weeks.

Here's the thread in question: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19102

Saw an FRS with this at an auto cross last month. It's probably what I'll get when I get a BRZ.

Any word on a company making a pillar gauge cluster?

doggy 10-20-2012 05:19 PM

There will be triple and single pods availible pretty soon ;) Just give a few weeks guys and these wil be up on sales ;)

Hippophobia 10-20-2012 05:51 PM

I don't know what it's like underneath it but I think a molded replacement cluster hood with gauge pods could look nice if done correctly. It would be right in your line of sight but not obstruct anything also. There is probably not enough room though without making it huge and ugly.

My personal favorite was the Subaru frog-eye dash pods. I wish that was an option without destroying the dash.

Doubtful, since there's a side-curtain airbag in the A-pillar.

Klar 10-20-2012 08:54 PM

I'd be interested in one that goes on the steering column in front of the speedo. I never look at the thing anyways.

Its already in the process of scaning / milling out the mold ;) Will be availible pretty soon :) 52mm gauges, full replacment for the center vents.

^ I don't really like the shape, seems to round for the interior and it also deletes the AC.

A-Pillar pods are plentiful for the VW MKIV and MKV cars with side-curtain air bags in the same location. It shouldn't be a problem...

That... seems like a really, really bad idea. Do they mount over the airbag cover, or is the airbag removed in favor of the gauges? Either way, not exactly something I'd be willing to do in my car. :(

It's really not that bad. Normally the airbags blow downward so the pods get pushed up and out of the way. I'll see if I can find some pics...

So those vents are no longer functional?

These vents are ussualy blowing cold air - no matter what you set up... But yea - these are no longer functional.

Theres still idea - about making small vents on the side - cuz there are some place left - but it might come a bit too much design wise...

Tansey86 10-22-2012 06:38 PM

Well, it looks great, should look even better once its finished, great work.

Will there be options with finish and or packages that include the 3 gauges?

Defiantly there will be options about finish, so far im thinking about Color coded, black rough plastic, CF... Or just anyway possible :) Even wrapped in leather or sway... :)

Watch this to see where I mounted my AFR gauge. Works pretty well. How many gauges do you actually need?

I need to mount 2 actual gauges since I am using the AEM Trueboost controller, and an AEM UEGO Wideband gauge. I really like the mounting point for that wideband though might have to pick your brain as to how you did the mount.

Wideband would be good there. Maybe down by the cellphone cubby below the radio for boost controller? Got a pic of the boost controller?

Supermassive 10-23-2012 03:17 PM

Here's the Trueboost kit. It's really slick since you can set boost on the fly.

Hmmm, why not stick the gauge on the left. Maybe stick the knob by the gas cap release. See crudely microsoft painted picture below for both.
Now that I think about it this is exactly what I'll be doing.

I think the WRX vents are even 60mm, so it may even be possible to stick a WRX vent in one of the holes on that set up. Here's a pic of the other way around, where someone stuck a gauge in the vent similar to your idea.

I like how you cut and pasted the solenoid down there by the gas cap release! The solenoid goes between the turbo and the wastegate and basically throttles the pressure generated by the turbo that actuates the wastegate so you can basically boost up to 30 psi with this kit.

Just poking fun is all ;)

Holes are 52. Its not posible to fit 60 without midification do dash it self.. Still thinking about vents... Even if i would make them - they would be small - and not posible to close them... Just holes on the sides..

Guillaume 10-24-2012 06:17 AM

Would it be possible to have a 1-gauge pod and keep one of the two original vents (swap it from the the OEM panel)? With a N/A engine, all you really need is oil temp anyway and the passenger (aka "the GF") can keep a vent on her side.

There will be single gauge pod pretty soon too. It will be dash mounted - keeping all the vents in place.

He was saying he could set boost on the fly lol. I figured this is where he was going with it.

Yeah you can set it via the gauge itself, it has two push buttons on the face. That's why I am looking for a good mounting solution so that its within reach.

Should be easy to mount if to the existing pillar. Temporarily. And then get the single pod when it comes out.

mattles 10-24-2012 06:47 PM

I think the best idea would be a retrofit into the actual gauge cluster of the car. The analog speedo is 99.9% worthless anyways, just cram 2-3 gauges in place of that thing.

If you do insert vents, will the choice of vents be directional?

I like the design of the pod in the middle. I will definitely be up for one once they are ready. It is a bit rounded as another member mentioned. Will it be tweaked?

Synack 10-25-2012 12:27 AM

Kinda annoying that legit gauge pods aren't out by now.....
