Break in
So when I bought my Whiteout FR-S, the car was at a different dealership than the one I purchased it from. My dealership had "one of their old retired guys" take one of their 6AT Whiteout's, swap it for their 6MT, and drive the MT back for me. Anyways, the trip put about 120 miles on the car. I asked them how he drove it, and they replied "Kept it at 55 pretty much the whole way."
If you read the manual, break in recommends no long trips at a constant speed. The first 120 mile trip the car ever had seems to completely ignore the break in period. Now my car is in the shop for the 3rd day in a row for CEL. Thoughts? |
The fact it was driven at a rather constant speed for that short of a distance wouldn't bother me. Certainly since you've had it the rpm's have varied a lot.

120 miles at a constant speed isn't a lot? The first miles on the car, ever? Lol

Whether it's a little or a lot my point is I wouldn't be that concerned. To my way of thinking that's a lot better than a potential customer road testing it and bouncing the rpm's off the rev limiter. By the time you get your 1000 mile break in completed the internals in your car will have had plenty of variables applied to it and should be just fine.
Besides, the salesman wasn't with the old guy and it's not likely he didn't stop for coffee on the way, stop for a pit stop, stop for a smoke. I doubt any one would put it on cruise at 55 and not make any variables for that length of time. |
i would be slightly concerned that they drove it at 55 the whole way, but really how would you ever be able to tell that they drove it exactly at 55 without any variance in speed as would be best, in my mind that is a minor divergence from recommended break in procedures. realistically all that the break in is for is seating everything to the best it can be(simplistically), and there would be no reason why the CEL would be on because of hard, or recommended break in.

The guy drove it 55 the whole way? Yeah right, whens the last time you ever saw a sports car of any-type, or even an enthousiast car going 55 without being on their way to 70. I wouldnt be concerned about it, We drove a brand new cobalt SS Turbo from colorado to DC, put the entire "break in" period on the car in 1 go, mostly highway. Never had a problem with that engine till a dumbass decided to park his car in the engine bay. It was totalled and I miss that car. Now im sad, thanks.

Back on topic: I believe it's already been discussed that people will get the CEL regardless of if they followed the break-in procedure or not. |
I agree with pevious post. I think that 120 miles at 55 mph is really not a problem. There have been other posts (in the other thread) where people got the dreaded CEL at very low mileage ratings. One person didn't even get his car delivered before the CEL went on, another get his CEL at 25 miles on the ODO, etc. I also agree that I would rather have 120 miles @ 55 mph rather than 200 "test drive" miles.

i have to agree with what the general opinion is here. I believe by long trips the manual refers to 500+ miles.

fine

Given that "long trips" is subjective, I wasn't sure what qualified as such. Apparently my vehicle had the CEL after about 20 miles on the road.
Anyways, should be fixed up and ready for me by tomorrow or Tuesday. Thanks for the input. Sent from my ADR6410LVW using Tapatalk 2 |
