Rear diff service

How many miles are you guys doing your rear end services at? I am thinking of changing it out at my next oil change at 7500 miles. I will probably do it every 15k after that and will be switching to Motul gear oil.

I'm also interested in what people will be using to replace the factory fill. I'm thinking of going with Toyota or Subaru but Motul and others are being considered

We changed mine with motul at like 1,700 miles. It was nasty.

whitefrs 10-15-2012 06:57 PM

i changed mine at 1100

Just changed mine at 1800 with Motul.

Isnt the factory recommendation 30,000 miles?

Not sure but it's best to get any metal shavings out of the rear end from initial use. I'm surprised how soon everybody else is doing it but it's a cheap and easy service that adds peace of mind especially if you drive the car hard.

Nasty how exactly? Diff fluid is pretty nasty right out of the bottle. I change my KAAZ 2 way every 2000 miles or after every event because its a clutch type LSD but aren't these viscous? They typically dont need that much maintenance.

Anyone place a magnet in the old oil and find any metal filings?

They're a TORSEN LSD & yes they're don't require much in the way of maintenance. Just change the oil every 30K miles & they're as happy as Larry.
Redline 75w-85 would be my choice if you want to keep with the OE spec, 75w-90 if you want a bit more bite in the lsd or 80w-140 of you're taking it on the track.

It does. I changed mine at around 1200 miles and the fluid looked good. The magnet on the drain plug was pretty grungy though.

I went with 75W85 as suggested in the owner's manual.
