New windshield cost?
So, this morning a rock became a perfect assassin. He took out my windshield! Well not totally, but still. I was driving behind a dump truck on the way to work. I tried to maintain about 100 feet or more because of my fear for rocks hitting the car. Well, what do you know... THUMP!! I looked around but didn't see anything. Then I noticed a line on the corner of the windshield about 3 inches long. By the time I got to work it was 4 inches long. The rock hit the black trim on the window just on the edge so you can not see it. But since it hit the edge, it fractured it. After work the crack was about 13 inches long.
Anyways, just wondering... Has anyone priced out a new windshield? I have not contacted the insurance company yet. I just want to get a price feeler out for it since my deductible is $500. |
Got in a wreck and had to get mine replaced. Receipt shows $458 for the windshield plus tax.

That's why I never follow 18 wheelers or dump trucks. But if I were you, change it ASAP. It could shatter anytime.

Most insurance companies will waive the deductible for a windshield replacement.

Thanks guys. I hate following them too, but I had no choice. Couldn't pass for obvious reasons in the "no passing zone" and there was on coming traffic when I was in the passing zone. Go figure! haha.
Yeah, I want it replaced asap. I could feel the crack as I ran my finger over it. So I'll be driving the truck till this gets done. http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u...FE8940376A.jpg |
Yikes! That's a long crack! Hope it gets fixed soon and sorry to hear about the rock messing up your car!

MA has glass coverage on most insurance policies i have seen. dont know about you're state
|
Ha! That's not a crack, it's a scratch! Go through Wyoming sometime, if you have 5 cracks hitting the edge of the windshield it's illegal, 80% of vehicles with a WY plate will have 8 or more! :)
I've never paid more than $300 for a windshield, including a number of large truck ones. Just don't go to the guys that do all the advertising, how do you think they pay for it all? :) |
Check your state laws. Your insurance company might replace it for free.

Thats probably close. I had something similar happen a couple of weeks ago, empty gravel truck with a pup driving like a maniac, 20kmph over the 100 kmph limit, using all 3 lanes to pass people and spraying stuff all over the place everytime he changed lanes with the empty pup. He passed me, so I let him go ahead and then at about 80 yards distance, WHACK in the upper right hand corner. It was a star, so chip repairable, at $70. But it still shows, and I know its there!! These guys are just menaces with no respect for anything. Someone was killed this week when a rock stuck between tandem wheels of a gravel truck and got flung through the windshield of a car going the other way killing the front seat passenger! Pickup trucks(especially the really tall ones) without mud flaps are a similar hazard. |
I didn't get a chance to call today. I tried the other day, but they were already closed. Anyways, I looked at the windshield again and the crack grew a few more inches. I should take it out for a spin and hit the on ramp to see how much more I can crack it! j/k
Does anyone know if a window repair kit would seal it up a little? I think mainly I want to use the kit on the corner/edge where the tiny cherry is. I want to seal that edge where it meets the rubber seal because I'm looking at a possible thunderstorm on Monday (if the weatherman is right). I would park it under the carport, but the cats will have a field day with my car! Yeah, I hate those damn dump trucks. I think from now on I'm just gonna pull over and let whoever is behind me take the lead and let the dump truck steam ahead a mile or two. |
Check with your insurance company. A glass loss is not considered chargeable and will not affect your rates. If it turns out the damage is less than your deductible they can still help you out by referring you to the glass company that will save you the most. The insurance companies know the glass businesses very well.

Now it's almost half the windshield and in my line of vision. |
I haven't done it yet. Been lazy and the crack stopped half way across the windshield. Probably going to do it soon since it's pay day. In fact, I can call tomorrow and see.

I know a lot of people are telling you that insurance will just cover it, but I went ahead and looked it up for your area, and apparently there are no waivers for your deductible in NC.
Wish I could help more than that, but when my Protege5 windshield broke (TWICE in six months) it was covered here, so I never even saw what it would've cost. So the best thing to do is move to SC, get your insurance, get your windshield covered, and then move back to NC. :D |
Our windshields seem to be brittle. Lightweight must be thin!

I'm not saying the rear window would be covered the same as a front, but when we had a tornado here back in 2007, it knocked out the rear window on my Speed3 and tore up the shed. I had to pay out of pocket for the rear window. So I figured the front would be the same. I'll try again this week and call. I left the business card at home on Friday so I couldn't call while I was away. |
I have two cracks on my windshield. Was thinking about getting them filled instead of a whole new windshield.
