Subaru BRZ, Scion FR-S Stuck With a Software Glitch

Hey guys been awhile since I dropped by.

Just saw this article on the P0019 error you guys have been posting about explains it all in depth.. Just picked up my FR-S last week. So far no major problems as of 300+ miles on her so far. Squeaky drivers window on roll down. Take her in to get that looked at tomorrow.. Other then that I love this car..

Enjoy!

Interesting ; i also have a window problem at 2000 miles

Heads up!

Yea and now I'm reading a thread about a recall due to possible fire problems caused by Techs trying to fix such a thing with lube that may cause a fire.. Our cars don't seem to be in the recall though.. Interesting is right..

does this mean we should be pushing the cars hard durring the first 100 miles? most people seem to be babying them, what does that do to what the ECU learns?

Well both manufacturers have now gone on record that this is a software, not hardware issue. Time will tell.

As a side note, the ECU re-flash seems to have worked for me even though I was past the initial 100 miles. Even with the new coding though, I can feel a shudder (misfire?) every once in a while at idle.

If would be stupid for developers only adjust ECU operation during the first 100 miles. Other cars that I had did it constantly. So if you change your habits, it would change behavior after some short time (things like throttle response etc.). Again from my past experience every software flash resets all learned parameters to default, and car feels sluggish for some time. I suspect this car does the same, and author of the article is misinformed.

Hmm... Interesting. I did get a CEL/SL around 1600 miles and they replaced my ECU. I pushed my car pretty hard right after I got it back (just to make sure I didn't get it again) and if this is the case, my ECU has learned to handle my spirited driving :party0030::happyanim:

I really hope this is true. Going to go in to my dealer this weekend and bring this issue up.

Hopefully they are not idiots and blame it on my headerback.

It's very missleading that they say it will come up with P0019. There are P0016, P0017 and P0018 also which also shows up for some when they have bad idle and CEL.

The last 2 digits is just referring to which cam gear is noticed to be out of sync and since there are 4 VVT cam gears there are 4 codes.

That remaining shudder concerns me as my FR-S still has that too after a new ECU. Last night it was ok, this morning it had some mild shudders with idle dip and then on the way home from work it seemed fine again. There was never any pattern to how the engine behaved so I never knew when it would misbehave. If I keep driving it for 20,000kms more and it never stalls or throws a CEL, but the idle still dips and the engine shudders sometimes does this constitute as it being fixed? I'm sure it does in the eyes of Toyota/Subaru and the dealerships, but not necessarily in the minds of some owners.

Yeah I've been wondering the same thing. I've decided I can live with a slight shudder occasionally at idle, but if it gets worse, I will bring it back to Toyota regardless of whether it throws a CEL or not.
