Drifting?
Let's say I slide around (in rain) at an abandoned parking lot with nobody around, far away from residential areas (for noise pollution) and blocks away from moving traffic.
What usually happens when you get caught by a cop? Warning? Reckless driving ticket? Impounded & crushed? If you can speak from experience then I'd greatly appreciate it. I'm mainly asking because there's basically no venue in Hawaii (Oahu Island) for us to enjoy the car or do it 'legally' for that matter. They'd rather build more golf courses (in addition to a billion other ones here) rather than open a decent track. And no, I'm not condoning "illegal street racing hurrr" |
U prolly wouldnt get a warning and theres no way u would get crushed prolly just a ticket for a strongly amount of money. Im just guessing on this one

This is irrelevant but it's what disney thinks of drifting... lol |
Laws vary state by state, county by county, town by town. With that bit of "I'm not a lawyer" disclaimer goodness out of the way...
Parking lots are usually private property, and as such a cop can't cite you for traffic violations there unless specifically asked to by the owner of the lot. If you're sure the lot is truly abandoned, and out of sight of most traffic, the most a cop should be able to do is show up and ask you to leave. He has the right to do so, and you should politely obey if he does, and not do something incredibly dumb like come back the very next night. Now, if the owners of said lot actually call the cops, or if you're being a hooligan driver in an area where there's a danger to others (e.g. right next door to a school), then things may go a bit harder for you. That said, it would be very unlikely to escalate beyond a moving violation ticket, and certainly not to the point where they'd confiscate and crush your car (unless they find drugs, open containers of booze, or kidnapped women in the trunk. Don't drift with drugs, booze, or kidnapped women in your trunk!) Just use some sense about your locale, be respectful and courteous to the cops if/ when they show up, and you should be fine. |
Hmm... interesting... mine asked me about my car and we talked about it then forced me to do some donuts for them. I wish I knew what I was doing at the time.

No idea about the parking lot, but looks like there is an autocross venue on Oahu.

I usually keep my time reasonable before departing.
I had a mall cop come after me once, but unlike my M3 they didn't have snows on and got stuck in the pursuit. :D |

Private property if you have permission you can do what you want. No permission = BAD for you.

Above all else, be polite if you do get stopped. Cartman hit the nail on the head. Parking lots are private property, and police wont approach you unless there is a complaint from the owner, or they are witnessing a violation.
If you are approached explain that it's your first rear wheel vehicle, and you are concerned over controlling it in inclement weather. If they do ticket you, you can always contest it in court. I always contest my tickets for any reason I can. I have about an 8-1 success to fail ratio lifetime here in chicago. |
