Car Won't Start

Just to document, I took delivery of my BRZ on 9/19 and it wouldn't start as of 9/21. I'm out of town and had my buddy get the car towed to the local Subaru dealer.

It's been sitting at the dealer for 3 days and counting and they still have no idea what's wrong with it. So much for being able to enjoy my new car when I get home from 2 weeks away... :sigh:

I had a issue with mine when I had the steering wheel locked full to one side! Would not start unless I pressured the steering wheel like a normal keyed car! Took me a while to figure that out!

Status on 10/8 - 7 days down (officially)

No timeline available for repair. Dealer has no idea what's causing this issue or when there will be an answer.

19 days of ownership and the vehicle has been inoperable for 17 of them.

This just demonstrates poor training of technical staff at that dealership. You should complain to Subaru NA. They have customer's hotline for issues like this one.

When you say it won't start, does the engine even turn over?

@#$%! I was afraid of this! I encountered this Saturday Oct. 6th. I drove 4 miles away to meet friends. I turned my car off and walked over to an indoor ATM machine. I walked back over to my car and got in. Upon attempting to start the engine (with the heater on....should not matter) I got crank but no turnover! :confused0068: The car restarted on the 4th attempt! WTF?

I've had very similar experiences, I'm going to sub to this thread and see what's discovered to be wrong. CEL isn't on and it happens randomly and I cannot seem to recreate it.

The car won't turn over at all. It's as if you just hopped in the car and turned the car to the "On" position.

Absolutely no activity at all.

I hope no one else is stuck dealing with the same problem I am. I have a whopping total of 53 miles on the odometer, 8 of which were there when I took delivery.

Perhaps the most frustrating thing is the complete lack of communication. Not once have I received a call back from the dealership - I'm having to check in every day to see if anything has been done. SOA has given me 1 call back and I was given only a name, but no direct extension to call - information which is useless to me if I can't contact the person who's working on my case.

All in all, my experience hasn't been ideal and my confidence is continuing to slip.

The dealership I purchased from is relatively small and they've actually done everything they're supposed to IMO.

The dealership recognized they didn't have the expertise needed and has been in contact with the official Subaru technical assistance line. The problem is not even the Subaru factory field tech is unable to come up with a diagnosis for the non-start condition... it's a little worrisome to be honest.

schtebie 10-09-2012 12:50 PM

Update!

SOA is working on scheduling a Field Service Engineer to look over my vehicle at the dealership. There's no guarantee that anything will be resolved, but at least there's a little positive momentum going.

Keeping my fingers crossed that I can get my car back on the road.

schtebie 10-10-2012 07:44 PM

Subaru engineer was at the dealer inspecting my BRZ today. According to the dealer, they ordered some parts that should arrive tomorrow. The engineer is expected to be back to take part in the repair process.

No specifics were provided.

If I were you, I'd be requesting a refund of AT LEAST a month's car payment.

Also, my car wouldn't start when it was delivered to me. It was because the dealer (out of state) forgot to remove the alarm system they installed. I bypassed it. I assume you don't have such a simple issue though.

I'm completely with you on requesting compensation. It's on my list of things to hash out with SOA as soon as I know my car can be repaired. If not, I'll be asking for a new one.
