PERRIN Crank Pulley Impressions

I apologize in advance if I'm late to doing this mod and if there's already another discussion thread on this!

I just did this mod today and I have to say first off, what a breeze. Props to Toyota/Subaru for making this car a dream to work on. I remember doing a similar mod to my Si and ugh was it a PITA...

Now for the noticeable gains. It does seem to spin up the rpms a LITTLE faster, but nothing night and day. However, I feel that it will be a nice bonus to other mods as the power gets up there, it can get to it faster.

While a lot of people will ask the "how much hp does it add" type of question, I don't think that's the best part of this mod at all. The gains in that department are very minor. The real improvement is the overall feel of the car, especially at lower rpms in the first two gears. The car likes to roll easier and feels less lurchy on feather throttle.

Easiest way to see what I am describing is to go in a parking lot or something, get to about 3-5 mph and shift to second and be gentle with the throttle. It feels very "heavy" and makes a mechanical noise as if it's struggling a little bit. This effect was greatly reduced with the pulley and reminds me of the "near infinitely low" second gear that I had with the Si. For people who do a daily second gear roll through rush hour traffic will definitely notice the smoother feel. The entire car feels a lot smoother and less like it needs more throttle to just get rolling, love it!

For ~$100 and 30 minutes, this mod is a no-brainer. If you haven't pulled the trigger, do it!

Also another bonus, the idle 'issue' is var less pronounced. Previously, it would periodically bump to about 1000rpm whereas now it only jumps a couple hundred (~700). Interesting!

Truthfully I didn't feel much difference but at the price I didn't really care.

Just ordered one of these tonight. Can't wait to get this and my Injen intake this week and then move on to bigger and better mods!

I installed this today along with the Perrin Intake Tube and Cold Air.

Amazing difference with all three.

Super interested in a pulley but I'm worried it will void my warranty. You know Toyota would love to blame mechanical failure on a pulley system.

Well - very easy to remove and reinstall the stock one. Like... Easy.

Can't believe I didn't think of that lol. Thanks. Any issues at idle?

Gopherboy6956 03-24-2013 11:45 PM

None what so ever. It's smooth, no vibrations or problems. Car runs smooth and seems to want to get up and go a bit more in 1-2 gears.

I heard a light weight crank pulley will mess up the balance of the engine and bad for water pump, oil pump and else....is it true?
any downside for this pulley?

Gopherboy6956 03-25-2013 12:02 AM

Depends on the Pulley, Engine, Weight etc.
