mine were filthy for some unknown reason, just slimed with grease

Its not grease, its shipping wax. All the wheels on the FRS /BRZs I've detailed were still covered in it. Autoglym Intensive Tar Remover will remove it no problem. Spray on, let dwell for a minute or two, agitate with a brush and wash as normal. Here is a pic from the last one I did. Nuts on left have been cleaned.

holy crap that's a difference. i bought chrome valve caps and thought to myself that it stood out too compared to the gunmetal lugs. instead, it looks like i made a perfect match. i shall be cleaning my lugs soon lol.
