CARSMO duckbill spoiler installed on BRZ Limited
I've never found the BRZ limited spoiler to my taste. It's shaped oddly and doesn't seem to know if it wants to be a wing or a spoiler. I also think the shape of the BRZ/FR-S in the rear is nicely complimented by a duckbill rather than a wing or the odd spoiler the Limited comes with.
We begin here with the boomerang spoiler, booma-wing, axe-heads, etc: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8454/8...0e094374_c.jpg You may have noticed the car is dirty, I didn't wash it at this point for a reason I'll get to later. Unpacking the CARSMO spoiler, I find it packaged well against the careless whims of the USPS. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8320/8...125589e2_c.jpg It had two layers of bubble-wrap with extra end-caps to protect the tips. Here it is unpacked. It came with a microfiber towel and a couple CARSMO stickers too. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8038/8...287fa698_c.jpg So pop the trunk and remove the liner and the four rubber plugs covering the bolts under the "wings" of the stock spoiler: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8462/8...a69d2aaf_c.jpg Removed: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8449/8...89cd5518_c.jpg After removing the four bolts with an 8mm socket, there are five plastic pins that continue to hold the center of the spoiler on. The outer two are rectangular with tabs: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8456/8...e017a39f_c.jpg http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8041/8...11583ea5_c.jpg The center three are plastic pegs: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8033/8...6cac5614_c.jpg Squeeze the tabs on the rectangular pins and pull the spoiler away from the trunk lid. It'll pop off, just be careful you don't drop the spoiler on your paint when it comes loose. The two spoilers next to each other: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8460/8...eaeb7cb1_c.jpg http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8449/8...62383b43_c.jpg Now, the reason why not to wash the car first is because the spoiler traps a lot of dirt underneath it. That needs to be cleaned up and the scuffs from the spoiler taken care of. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8317/8...0e207735_c.jpg http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8452/8...ebbbff1d_c.jpg Time to wash the car. But those holes need to be covered. A vinyl shop could provide some scrap pieces to cut up for this. I had a vinyl contingency sticker that I could use. Cut out 9 pieces and apply them to the holes from the inside of the trunk. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8031/8...d02b45bc_c.jpg http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8314/8...5dcfc989_c.jpg Wingless and sealed: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8313/8...ff75fd04_c.jpg I also took this opportunity to debadge. This is not needed to install the CARSMO spoiler unlike the TRD spoiler. But I wanted to do something a bit different with my badges. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8317/8...6e7a8ea2_c.jpg Now while cleaning, when the dirt is cleaned from the trunk, get some Scratch-X or similar and neaten up the scuffs. This serves a double purpose because it will also remove any wax on the paint. When applying paint, vinyl, double-sided tape, glue, etc. the longevity and durability of the project is *directly* proportional to the care taken in prepping the surface. You want no wax or oils on the paint where the wing will be stuck on. Nice clean paint: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8449/8...1183480a_c.jpg Now that you've got nice clean paint, apply more vinyl patches on the outsides of the holes: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8457/8...4c679c63_c.jpg http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8316/8...dbf08404_c.jpg Test fit: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8039/8...749bced5_c.jpg Use blue painter's tape to mark the spoiler's position so it can be replaced easily once you get the tape started. Now prep the spoiler for applying it. Peel back the ends of the tape to create tabs that can be pulled when the spoiler is in place: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8032/8...2dbff829_c.jpg http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8042/8...fb659b52_c.jpg With the spoiler in place, pull the tabs to expose the adhesive and press the spoiler to the trunk. Then wax the spoiler and trunk to finish. And it's on! http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8459/8...b9db2fc2_c.jpg http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8174/8...841bdec7_c.jpg More pics: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8317/8...ca045620_c.jpg http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8174/8...396d9346_c.jpg This is why I debadged: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8320/8...8dfc1746_c.jpg BRZ badge in the FR-S location. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8173/8...3c8658f0_c.jpg http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8311/8...7d80c1dd_c.jpg http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8176/8...922e6180_c.jpg http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8453/8...4cc04b0f_c.jpg http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8454/8...52667746_c.jpg |
