Marine/ Freshwater Aquarium People here?

Thought I would see if any of you are marine or freshwater enthusiasts?

Here is my tank (300 Gallon system/ 180 gallon display/ all custom and embedded into my house):

thats a real nice setup. i have always wanted a custom tank and have the perfect place for one at my house.

thats freshwater? whats the yellow fish in there?

gmookher 09-29-2012 05:31 AM

sure looks like salt to me

Tanuki 09-29-2012 07:48 AM

Yeah sorry marine aquariums are saltwater for those who don't know. Mine is a saltwater tank. That yellow fish is a Hawaiian Yellow Tang.

Years ago I tried my hand at a fresh water tank. With time I became frustrated with my useless attempts to make a fish community that would live together peacefully and finally gave everything to a friend who was more patient than I was.

Dang...! For that size of a tank I must ask if I can please see how you set up your sump with all its media...

Tanuki 09-29-2012 04:38 PM

I don't have pictures right now but basically it's a 125gallon tank with a large skimmer and tons of live rock / a refugium.

I realize this is a really poor picture, but it is the only one I have of the sump/ refugium right now.

Yeah that is actually in the garage. You can see the return/ drain lines there in the middle near the skimmer. Both are 1.75 inch pvc, but the return line starts as a piece of hot tub vinyl piping. The door next to the tank is the control room for the house (HVAC/ Water Heater etc) and will eventually house a controller for the dosing pumps etc. I wish I had a little more money to dump into this right now, but my lps are growing fine, so it is less of a priority until I catch the SPS itch.

Nice set up, Tanuki. We have a 45 gallon Freshwater tank. We'd like to have saltwater tank eventually, but the space, time, and money are still being discussed. Freshwater is a breeze when it comes to maintenance.

Freshwater is easier, but I love thinking that there really is no limit to the creatures I will find for my tank. I think I am right on the edge of minimum tank requirements for the coral/ bamboo sharks too. Freshwater is cool though. I love some of the planted set ups I have seen.
