DIY Cusco Spin Turn Knob Installation - Video Guide
 

Here is a short and quick video I made while doing this. Sorry that it's not as in dept, but this explains and covers pretty much all you need to know to figure it out. Also it was a little hard to do this with one hand and record with the other, so that's what it doesn't completely show me doing everything.

Q:You may be asking yourself, what is a spin turn knob or "drift button?"
A: Well these replace the button on your e-brake allowing you to depress the button and the E-brake will always release when you let go of the handle. This means that instead of having to thumb the button to release the brake you are able to simply yank up and let go.

Q:Well, how do you lock it?
A:Simple. You just push the flat tab up with you thumb and pull it up or pull it up first, then pull the tab outwards. This will lock the ebrake and you can park with it up. Push the button in, like you would with your stock button when you need to release it.

In the video, you can pause it at each step phase to read the tips and instructions if you need to. This install only requires your hands, but optional tools can be used if necessary. Install can be done as quickly as in 10 min. Hope this video will be useful to some of you drifting fans! :party0030:

You can find the Cusco drift button on sites like Rallysportdirect or Enjuku for about $26+shipping cost. They come in three colors. Red, Silver, and Cusco Blue. So Enjoy your new drift tool and try not to get into too much trouble. As with all other mods, you attempt this at your own risk!!

looks good. what exactly does the new button do over the old button?
since spring is removed, I assume you can pull on it to drift without the handle locking.

do you just push out on the lip of the new button when you want to park/lock the handle?

Yup, that's exactly right. Doesn't lock up, making it easier and faster to pull the ebrake without the hassle of having to fumble with the stock button. And again yes, push the tab up with your thumb or pull it out and it will lock. Push it in like the stock one when you want to release it.

I didn't think about it at the time, but I noticed that if you are ebrake drifting, your day light runners will turn off and on, hahaha. Since normally, when the parking break is up, they turn off and turn on upon release. :P

Not sure if you noted this in your video, but using a blow dryer to heat up the ebrake handle would definitely simplify removal ;)

Yeah that would probably work. I didn't do it though. I just pulled and twisted it. Someone should try using a blow dryer to confirm this! :thumbsup:

For those intersted these things go on ebay for about 5-10 bucks with free shipping and its the same thing in any color you want.

Not quite. My brother has one from ebay that is on his AE86, however we tried to put the Cusco one on his 86 and it did not fit. I can confirm that the thread sizes are different. I'm not sure if this applies to all of the ebay knobs or if you have one that fit, but this is what I know from looking at the two. I would like for it to be cheaper too, but I also don't want people buying the wrong thing.

The ones on ebay won't fit, the thread sizes are different. The knob is on that page, but marked up in price insanely high at $89!!

Was just gifted a red knob yesterday. I'll try to post pics after I install, probably during lunch.

You can get the handle cover off by hand, but I had to use pliers for the chrome-treated button. It wouldn't spin for anything with just finger grips. The button sticks out much further than I'd like and it's very loose-fitting, so it rattles when you purposely move it. I'm sure it'll be fine in everyday use. It's pretty cool to be able to lift up and down freely! Thanks for this thread!

Just want to point out here that you don't need to remove the handbrake grip or handbrake boot to do this. I've seen a number of videos where they do this and I can't seem to tell why. I installed mine last week by simply twisting off the old knob and spring, and twisting on the new knob. The rest of the handbrake stayed in tact the whole time.
