Second Gear Crunch?

Pulling secod gear in my car is never a sure-fire pleasant thing. Either the linkage or a synchro seems to make a "glunch" kind of sound. Worse when it is cold and can be timed to avoid if I pay attention.

Is this normal or should I have dealer look into it during first service?

Seems to be normal. Others have reported it. Weighted shift knob definitely helps.

FRiSson 09-26-2012 06:38 PM

Yup. Still get it. But less than before. It helps to wait a half second in neutral before going into second, when the engine is still cold.

I have it as well. Seems like if I'm around 4K RPM when I shift from 1st to 2nd it goes a bit smoother, but generally a more deliberate shift movement (versus just softly moving into 2nd) yields better results.

same issue here. its better when warm but still not 100% smooth.

don't know if it's due to the drivetrain movement etc. i have some Cusco collar ordered and Perrin rear shift bush and hopefully will fix it.

Must have been a bad batch. My transmission shifts into second smoother and easier than any car I have driven.

same here, when warm all good, took it to a dealer, they said if its still happening on the next service they will look into it properly.

I have 3200 miles on my car and it got a lot better now compared to when it was brand new, but it's still not 100% smooth.

Same here....

Mine was like that from the beginning, and as others have said, it did improve as the transmission warmed up. I also got this once in a while going from 2nd to 3rd. I changed my fluid at around 1800 kms and the 2-3 crunch went away immediately. The 1-2 crunch still happens occasionally, but less than before. I'm in Ontario as well and if it starts to come back as the temperatures outside drop, I'm going to try a thinner fluid.

Try shifting in 2 motions- 1st to neutral, then neutral to 2nd.

Yeah this works, but I bought a FR-S, not a Peterbilt.

shifting from 1 - 2 at 5K rpms seems to help the syncros work better and i get no crunch. ymmv.
