Brake Fade
 

Any of you guys get brake fade when driving hard? I did 4 runs at turnbull yesterday (2 up and 2 down) and the 4th run which was downhill I had such bad brake fade that it took such a far distance for the car to come to a stop...

What type of fade did you have?

1. Pad fade- You pressed on the pedal...the pedal remained hard, but the car didn't slow down. That means you exceeded the temperature threshold of the pad.

or

2. Fluid fade- You pressed the pedal...the pedal got soft and went down towards the floor. That is indicative of boiling the brake fluid, which creates air bubbles in the system, which are compressible.

Scenario 1 above, pad fade, is the more likely scenario in a canyon run if you were running stock pads. Scenario 2 would be more common on the track once the brakes got really saturated with heat.

My recommendation would be get a higher quality pad (something like a Ferodo DS2500), and some quality brake fluid (AP Racing Super 600). Feel free to contact me if you need parts. Thanks.

2. The OEM pads are not very good at all, follow the advice Jeff gave you and you'll be doing much better without spending too much cash.

agree with the above. I've done track days at buttonwillow on 100 deg days with no fade on carbotech XP10s. stock pads stink...
