"Placeholder" car?

So. The car I drive and have been driving for the past 4 years was totaled last week. A 1999 Altima. Guy in a Prius pulled out right in front of me while I was in the right-most lane. I braked, but wasn't able to stop in time. Slammed into rear half of the Prius, airbags deploy in my Altima, my car is totaled. (I'm perfectly fine) Other driver was drunk. Still, because of that I no longer have a car under my name. FML.

I have about 30k saved up for a new car. Its meant for the FT-86/FR-S/BRZ. Said car would have become my new daily driver. However if I get a "new" car, I might be turning the FT-86/FR-S/BRZ into a weekend car.

While I can borrow one of my parents cars (4runner, Solara, S5) when they let me, they don't always allow me to drive one. However its not "my" car, I can't do what I want to it. I also can't go out all the time, since they're not always around to ask. However I'm stuck (kinda at war with myself). Should I get a replacement for the Altima or should I just stick it out and wait? (that release date is still a long ways away...)

What are your thoughts?

--IF I was to get another car, I've got 3k from the insurance company, and 3k that I'm willing to put in to "match" the insurance money.

Ouch man sorry about that, must be a hassle. Is buying a used car and then selling it off again not an option? Or you could keep it, I heard it drives down insurance if you have a crappy old car that's your "daily driver".

Gotta agree w Serial.

If you wanna make FRS/BRZ as weekend car and gonna do lil tuning and so on, I would recommend buy <$3k good gas saver car (like Miata, Civic, & so on).

But I would do opposite. I'll buy Miata/S2k and make it weekend track car and keep FRS/BRZ as DD car.

Dude sorry to hear, im in exact same situation right now, where I wrote my car off a week and a half ago. But im looking at buying a Liberty Spec.B H6 '06 model and have decided to put off getting a FT86 on release day.

What a shame, dude. :( Another Drunk driver fails again. Glad you made it out.

That you saved $30k which should be plenty for the car :w00t:. Scion doesn't offer trims, so it should be cheaper :iono:, though you can add options but they are expensive. The rumors are saying that the BRZ is supposed to top out at around $25-$26k, maybe more. Do you want to wait for the STI version(if it happens)? Probably won't be a turbo available in this car, so I doubt it will break $30k. Anyway, it's something to consider.

I would bet that sharing a car for 9 months with your parents could work out. I have really cool parents and have had to share vehicles with grandparents and friends for an extended period of time(a year). I am buying a vehicle ASAP though. They might be fine with lending me a vehicle now as I have a clean record. But I rarely go anywhere or do anything since it means borrowing a car. I buy extra gas to cover any wear and tear, yet I still feel bad for wearing out their vehicles :(. It didn't help that I was responsible for damage to one and there were suggestions of excessive "wear and tear" from extra driving on another. On my car, those wouldn't be issues nearly as much as the amount of stress it has caused to friendships/relationships.

9-12 months, that could work out, depending on your situation. It did for me but that is my limit for a reasonable amount of time.

$30k will get you some serious cars over there! You might actually be better off holding off a year or two anyway, to find out any problems and if the FT86 is a flop or not.

Or just buy a beater and wait till release date.....

Buy a beater

Giccin 09-15-2011 03:21 PM

Beaterrrrrrr. You can find some pretty good beaters for 3k. :)

Sorry for your loss though. And how come that guy in the prius's insurance pay you more? When I got rear ended by 3 cars.... they paid for damages (3.5k) for both bumpers and a "possible bodily damage" payment of 1k. Lol

Air bags would save you but you could always say the quick jerk from your neck (whip lash) was slightly painful.

maybe just borrow a car for a few weeks while you look for a car you like. If it turns out to be not that much of a hassle you can just keep borrowing (although I understand what it feels like to borrow someone's car as some of the other commentors said =/ ) and after a while you can find a beater and use it. It's only a placeholder anyway, so you can have fun with it! teach a few friends how to drive stick =b

Well. 3k is from our insurance, we have total loss coverage. The money we're getting from the other party... well I'll know that in two to three months. CPK (that's Craig P. Kenny, not California Pizza Kitchen) is dealing with Gieco for us, and I'm not expecting too much more.

For now my parents are "giving" me the S5 till the end of the month! But I still feel bad, I mean, the S5 is literally brand new and is supposed to be my dad's garage queen. Knowing the distances to and from work as well as to and from university, I'm gonna be racking up about 220 miles per week...

I'll be shopping around for a beater. Gonna see if I can find an MR2 or maybe a Miata.

OR a used bmw e36. Manual, RWD, coupe, bulletproof straight six, and weighs in at 3100 lbs stock. Turbos have made these engines produce over 1100 hp. With weight reduction, 2500 lbs is possible as well.

It's on my wishlist :scared0016:
