2012 or 2013 Build?

Hey guys,

so I have a dilemma, I've spoken to the stock controller at my dealer who has been very helpful. She has informed me that my car build date is currently still unconfirmed but is the next one on the list to be requested from Japan.

Now, if she requests it as the system tells her to, it would be probable for me to get a Dec 2012 or Jan 2013 build (more likely 2012 build though) whereas if I ask her to request the car after me first and THEN put mine in the next month I would probably get a JAN/FEB 2013 build (thus making sure I get my hands on a 2013 build date)

To sum up, if I:
Leave the order as is >> DEC12/JAN13 BUILD (JAN13/FEB13 DELIVERY)
Postpone Order >> JAN13/FEB13 BUILD (FEB13/MAR13 DELIVERY)

As you can see either way ends up with the POSSIBILITY of getting a 2013 model, but only the second option CONFIRMS that I will.

I am leaning towards the second option because I am going on holiday until mid Jan anyway, the only risk is that it will end up being built in Feb2013 and delivered in March 2013, which is AGESS away.

So I was just hoping to get some input from you guys (another perspective). Are there any points that you think should sway me away from the second option? Aside from a better resale value do you think there are any other benefits involved with getting a 2013 model?

Thanks for the help guys.

Depends how long you intend to keep your car... maybe.

If you intend to sell it within the next 2-3 years it's not going to matter because the car will be in such short supply that prices are likely to remain high.

If you intend to keep it for 10+ years then the difference in resale between a 2012 and 2013 is likely to be minimal.

That said, I'm guessing... and frankly, I don't think you should be worrying about this kind of thing. The dealer is guessing when you are going to get your car and you might end up with a 2012 or 2013 no matter which way you decide to go.

Good luck.

I'm in a similar situation as you, travelling end of the year etc and specified a 2013 build. Since I'm travelling anyway, there's no point in picking up a car that will just sit in the garage. Plus avoiding first year production bugs is always a bonus.
I placed my order early June, build date 15/1/13.

I actually thought about it and there aren't going to be any changes in the 2013 model so the only reason I would want a 2013 build is for the resale value, which scuba-doc has pointed out, will not be affected significantly due to the limited supply of the car.

I am probably going to only keep it for a few years, definitely less than 10, thus further making the resale price differences minimal.

Also, I think many problems would have already been fixed, so I don't think that's a major problem. Since the earliest it will be built and delivered is Dec 2012 and Jan 2013 respectively, I would be back by mid January to pick up my car anyway which would be perfect.

Thanks for the help guys, really appreciate it!

I would happily take a 2012 model if I could get it now. I am very likely to get a 2013 model, but not stressed either way :)

I'm pretty sure that you will get a 2013 build no matter what. If you haven't been given a confirmed build month of December at this stage i would be very confident in saying you will get pushed out again and end up with at least Jan/Feb built car

I think I would wait for a 2013.. a few issues are popping up and I guess once they are sorted you might benefit.. in a year or two people and in fact with time the media may say get an 86/BRZ but avoid the 2012 models .. I think we have all seen those comments on second hand sales articles for particular cars..

Anyway ... just my thought

Well from what I hear, the November build 86s have already been confirmed, and December ones will be confirmed next month I think. At least that's what I've been told. If this is true, I am the next one at my dealer but it depends if TMCA decides to allocate the orange GTS man to my dealer in DEC or otherwise.

DanVIIIVI 09-24-2012 09:24 PM

December builds are confirmed this month, around middle of last week is when the batch matching occurs. If your dealer can't confirm your december build by now, then you may already be January onward. Fingers crossed that the announcement of an additional 740 builds across the range for the remainder of 2012 could assist in this matter ;)

If this is correct then my build date is possibly pushed out to the new year, ordered on 23rd June.

Had a call from stock controller confirming a 1000 units for Australia wide (excluding WA), have been allocated.

She also said that GTS production for AUS was affected due to the production of the alloy wheels which was also confirmed by another source, Not sure if this is legit but worth considering in forming opinions.

DanVIIIVI 09-24-2012 09:42 PM

I have heard nothing about alloy wheel supply issues. Not saying there isn't an issue but it hasn't been communicated to our dealership at this stage.

My order was cosi'd to toyota on June 24th, and i'm in the same boat. Our stock controller keeps me pretty well up to date on how things are progessing with 86's in general, as due to a cancellation i'm now first in line for a gts manual.

It's only 740 units for the last quarter, then another 700 units next quarter. The second batch of 700 for Australia will see an increase in the ratio of GTS Manuals built, whereas the additional 740 vehicles for this year are still even split between the variants, which won't help alleviate the GTS Manual shortage that much unfortunately.

Hopefully next year should see a jump in the number of 86's coming to Australia. I assume their figure of 18 months is based on the current supply..
